Heritage Eau de Toilette by Guerlain is a Woody Spicy fragrance for men. Heritage Eau de Toilette was launched in 1992. The nose behind this fragrance is Jean-Paul Guerlain. Top notes are Lavender, Aldehydes, Juniper Berries, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Lemon, Violet, Petitgrain and Green Notes; middle notes are Patchouli, Coriander, Geranium, Pepper, Carnation, Balsam Fir, Rose, Pink Pepper, Orris Root, Jasmine, Cyclamen and Lily-of-the-Valley; base notes are Sandalwood, Amber, Oakmoss, Cedar and Musk.

This masculine perfume bears the heritage of old values in revelation of the new age. It is addressed on man with a sense of style, elegant as well as traditional, presented as sharp woody and spicy fragrance. Designed by Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1992, it greets you with fresh notes of bergamot, orange, aldehydes, green accords, lavender, lemon, petit grain, violet, clary sage and the gentle touch of nutmeg. The middle notes of the perfume bring the explosion and richness of spices which interact with floral scents (pepper, coriander, orris root, along with rose, jasmine, carnation, honeysuckle, geranium and lily-of-the-valley). The warmth of the woody notes is emphasized at the base by cedar, vetiver, patchouli, amber, tonka bean, oakmoss, sandalwood and powdery vanilla. The elegant bottle, traditional and sheen, was created by Robert Granai, and can be bought as 50 and 100 ml edt, as well as the aftershave and shower collection.

I blind bought it. Because some people say it has some Zino aspects. So I thought I can handle this.

On first spray:
This does have nothing to do with Zino. Absolutely zero. What it does smell like, is my all time most disgusting scent ever… Obsession for men. And it is not mentioned once! Am I the only one getting this resemblance? I think most people compare listed notes and not the actual smell itself.

Damn this was een instant dislike from first sniff. It gets a little bit better in the drydown but wow… this smells dated indeed. Zino smells like a 2024 release compared to this.

And I have absolutely no problem wearing older scents like Antaeus, Oscar de la renta pour lui, PR pour homme, Zino, Ted Lapidus etc.

It could have saved me 60 bucks if only one person mentioned Obsession. Thank you Fragrantica!

For who is afraid of new bottle performance:
Very decent longevity with decent projection as well. For an edt it is quite good.

KingKaris

Its a lot of notes listed for what smells like a lemon pepper sandalwood.

Mr. Boston

I have long been a fan of the vintage formulation of Heritage, I recently picked up the new formulation. It smells fantastic to my nose, very little difference from the original, and the performance is excellent. For those of you inclined to hunt down the original, in this case, it’s not worth your time. Just by the current formulation.

CaptainCanuck

This is a beautiful fragrance, and (for those that care) has garnered a lot of compliments. It's for those that are probably used to fragrance, and are at least mature in the way they carry themselves.
FYI I got the new formulation and it is fantastic in performance. Others may have a different experience, but my juice is fantastic.

weazal

Applies spicy sharp like a classic barbershop. Instantly softens as violet/Iris becomes dominant. Mossy herbal briskness lends bite to the floral.

Warm vetiver and deep mahogany fill the mid/base while gentle floral almost imperceptibly projects at the top. Overall experience becomes warm, comforting amber.

It’s sturdy, distinctive, and wears well. Has youthful energy despite being a bit dated. Don’t think it’s full bottle worthy, but excited to revisit the sample!

I think I give up from Guerlain at this point. At least with most of the perfumes in the square bottles.
Most of them has been watered down to a point where it doesn't make sense to buy them anymore, even if you find them cheap. I have to respray this one (heritage) every 3hrs apparently....

Huge disappointment ....

Invasionbg

I don't know about the oldee batches but the new seems to be very weak 😔
This sort of perfumes usually are very potent.

If this ever gets discontinued, it will be in the same legendary status as Derby.

Héritage Eau de Toilette is a historic cornerstone of international perfumery, the absolute emblem of refined French savoir-faire. Created by master Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1992, imagined for a man
elegant, timeless in class and charisma, a timeless man. perfect, who loves to express his personality without imposing himself. Héritage, a fragrance that enchants both sexes, is an unforgettable olfactory experience that will remain imprinted in the memory of anyone who crosses its path, an extraordinary cornucopia from the imperial olfactory pyramid, unthinkable today. A fragrance that experienced in a modern key does not disdain the boudoir of the most daring and demanding women. Iconic masterpiece from the Maison Guerlain.

Smells amazing but i only get about 2 hrs out of it. I recently bought the edp as a back up bottle. I own the heritage edp with the slender bottle and wooden cap. These brand new formulations are very weak. The wooden cap bottle is literally twice as strong. They have to be cutting corners for what i can tell. Anyone else have this experience?

A copy of Lagerfeld Classic that came in 1978.

KopaneDePooj

I have a few Guerlains, and I love "Vetiver" and "L'Eau Boisee" and "L'Homme Ideal EDP" but I can't get along with this "Heritage" or "Habit Rouge".
I only have a 10ml decant of the current Heritage formulation, and all it portrays to me is 1500s - 1600s "ruff collars".
Mid to dry-down is just dusty old pink powder mixed with dusty old warm spices from an old drawer. Definitely not a blind buy. And it has nothing to do with Beau De Jour which I also own and love.

Is there a scent that could travel with Dracula across eons of time.....?
I could imagine Gary Oldman wearing this as he crosses "eons of time" to find his love, in the film Dracula, which also came out in 1992. This Woody Spicy scent by Jean-Paul Guerlain, has a timelessness and something about it that keeps me coming back for more.

There's a lot going on in the notes, but it opens with a burst of lavender accented by clean, fresh-spicy & aromatic tones, and already I can feel a dark, licorice-y patchouli swelling through. As it transitions to the heart, warm-spicy tones are added (coriander, black pepper & pink-pepper) but filtered through carnation and balsam fir, so as never to be too punchy. Spicy notes get refreshed throughout the wearing by oakmoss, while soft & faintly sweet sandalwood holds everything together. In the long drydown, sandalwood relentlessly inches ever forward in a seduction that would have Mina swooning.

This is targeted to men, and definitely leans masculine, but it's so smoothly blended that anyone could wear it. Has above average longevity, and soft but present projection. It's a love for me. 10/10. Enjoy!

perlindvall

Nice but weak, but ok, I gess sometimes you need to spray 15 times a day. The EDP is a different scent.

perlindvall

Classic scent, a bit dry. Impressive rating. Maybe blending EDP with EDT is the best thing to do here. Some similarities to Lagerfeld Classic perhaps.

My grandparents always had this green, slightly translucent piece of soap in their bathroom. In my memory at least, it smelled like Héritage. Having this perfume will always remind me of using that soap when I would stay over on a weekend, watching TV with my nan until late at night and getting up in the morning to get breakfast with my grandad

Mfinn's sober review below captures perfectly the allure of this fragrance: it is the epitome of understated luxury, combining an intoxicating lavender and vanilla 'Guerlainade' perfume with subtle floral and musky notes.

It is the sort of suave and sophisticated classic you would encounter in one of the Inns of Court, or Buckingham Palace or the Vatican, inoffensively perfuming the air but never assaulting the senses: a kind of olfactory Master of Ceremonies or Head Flunkey, who disappears into thin air having ushered you in and made you feel entirely comfortable.

A new Favourite!

Mfinn

I am still very new to the world of fragrances, but I have to remark about how much I love this fragrance. For reference, I have the Listerine bottle EDT. This fragrance is very different from the most popular ones you'll find on this site. This is not a boyish scent, it is not really a casual scent, and it's certainly not a sexy or protruding scent. This is very much an old-school, sophisticated, and elegant fragrance. There is absolutely nothing in this fragrance that is offensive or off-putting to me. The opening may be unsettling to those who are used to more mass-appealing fragrances, but I really grew to love the smell of the juniper and lavender. This is the only fragrance that I own that I wear consecutively. Even on days when I don't feel like wearing this fragrance, when I put it on I am joyously reminded how much I love it. This is only fragrance to date that I have come to consider as my own signature scent. If you're a man, not a boy, who is more formal, reserved, and dignified, I think you will find this a very good compliment to the rest of your presentation. Absolutely phenomenal, worth every penny.

The bounder

Wore this in the early 1990s. True class doesn’t go out of fashion. A real gentleman’s scent. Any one with a boy band haircut who thinks dress tracksuits are high fashion need not apply

gandrasta

It's spicy, it's woody, it's mossy. Yes this classic gentlemen fragrance is whatever you've imagine of class in the 90s. The most prominent note on my nose are coriander, patchouli and moss. Works for decent longevity for an edt

NecessaryExistence

I really enjoy this one. Smells high quality and classy. I like classic and old school fragrances, but this is a little too old school for me personally. It’s in the same style as Beau de Jour, but better value for money.

Collecting for 15 years and don't know how i managed to not snap this up. My love affair with Guerlain was solidified when i scored two 75ml bottles of the legendary black-rimmed LIDGE. Batches from 2013. Brace yourselves, because in 2013 they sold for $44.82 on Amazon. Anyhow, i pulled the trigger on a 2001 gold cap version of Heritage and it's incredible. Liked it so much i bought a second bottle a couple days later. I might like it more than LIDGE. i think it's an easier reach and one i could wear daily. LIDGE isn't really that type of fragrance for me. I read some on basenotes comparing to Nicolai NYI. Not sure where they are getting that impression cause i don't see it. I did, however, feel like this smells like something else that i own and love. I couldn't put my finger on it right away, but here's what i think this bears much more resemblance to than NYI. MPG Santal Noble. MPG might be my all-time favorite house, and SN is one i've had for years, back up bottle and all. I don't wear it much as i once did, which is probably why it took me a little while to make the connection. Not a dead ringer, but the complexity, the spices, the classiness. It's in the same vein as SN - it's a work of art.

tailoredshirt

I tried Heritage recently and immediately recognized the scent as one that my dad wore when I was younger. I even texted my stepmom to ask her, and she confirmed that they both loved Heritage.

Everyone defines 'masculine' and 'feminine' scent differently (if they define it at all) based on their own experiences, and this is what I think of when I think of 'men's fragrance'. Which is not to say that only men can wear it! Just that it is a standard for me in its genre. It's barbershop-adjacent with a prominent patchouli note, and it dries down to a beautifully spiced amber. It smells classy, rich, and expensive.

(For reference, my sample was from The Perfumed Court, purchased July 2023. Not sure which batch.)

The Wolf

I'm probably not going to say anything that hasn't already been said about this one but I'll give it a whirl. This is a classic gentlemen fragrance that still highly wearable in 2023 IMO. The most prominent notes to me are juniper, pine, coriander, carnation, nutmeg, lavender, geranium, pepper, iris, amber and cedar. Coriander and carnation are notes that can make a fragrance go sideways for me but it's well balanced here.

I've always believed Guerlain to not only be an all time great house with tons of pedigree and heritage, but also a tremendous value. The level of perfumery you're receiving for the price is unbelievable. This modern formula is blended and executed well, with good quality to boot. Does it smell dated? Not at all. Perfectly suited for modern wearing and highly versatile. Performance isn't beast mode but then again it's a reasonably priced EDT without screechy chemicals, so I'm happy to refresh periodically or carry a decant.

A classic that still works well in 30 years after it was released.

Scent 9/10
Performance 3.5/10

My Brazilian Review

At the risk of being too simplistic, but for better visualization, one can say Heritage is a spiced Zino from Davidoff.
And i love them both.
It's for the mature (not old!) gents out there.
My thing now is high longevity and low projection with good sillage.

IMHO. Pece!

For me this is a masterpiece . A Candidate for greatest of all time

As my favorite fragrance, I have had more than six bottles of HÉRITAGE and I currently hold five. In chronological order: two 125 ml bottles from 1992, one 75 ml from 1993 (which I eventually sold), one 2001 spray bottle with a gold cap, one 2013 spray bottle with a silver cap, one 2019 listerine bottle with a wooden cap, and I've also tried the newest square version from 2022.

To summarize these batches, 19' wood cap and 13' silver cap are not very different: their drydowns are both very soft, clean and comfortable, and hence these are also the batches that I find the most comfortable and easy to wear on a day-to-day basis. The latest square bottle version retains the same scent scent, though I feel that on close sniffing the fragrance lost about 10-20% and I feel like the aroma is thinner when you dig your nose in it. The older 1992 and 2001 batch both have more noticeable oakmoss than their later counterparts; the sandalwood in both are thicker, and the top notes are spicier, denser, and more tart overall. Between these two, 1992 batch has more noticeable oak moss, and the 2001 has a more orris powdery overall scent profile than 1992. But to be honest, my personal experience is that the Guerlain's have been doing a good job with reformulation until 2019. When your nose is more than 10 cm away from the application site, you won't notice any substantial difference.

It's worth mentioning that from what I've found, for the batches of July-August 1993 all the way up to mid-1994 there seems to be a slight problem with the formulation. the liquid color from the 1993 production is much lighter than the 1992 production, closer to the color of the HÉRITAGE AFTERSHAVE LOTION. My bottle does not seem to be a unique case, as the online photos of HÉRITAGE EDT from this time period all show a lighter color, eliminating the possibility of new juice in older bottle. In my own experience, the sceint profile of HÉRITAGE in this period were also less oak-mossy than the 1992 and my later 2001, and actually oddly seemed closer to the later 2013 version. These reasons have led me to get rid of the 1993 bottle myself. My guess is that this may have to do with the fact that LVMH in the middle of purchasing Guerlain. I think 1995 onwards is fine.
---------- ----
Regarding the overall scent, this perfume contains and capitalizes on the Guerlain legacy-- the Guerlinade base. Although the fame and recognition of HÉRITAGE is not as high as Mitsouko, Derby, Shalimar, and Habit Rouge, I still believe that after a few decades, this perfume will become recognized as an all time top five masculine fragrance.

It opens with a cool spiciness from the peppery lavender aldehyde mixture. It may not be particularly well received by new noses. It has the smell of the decaying forrest floor, and the surrounding golden leaves in the fall. Quite a natural and forest-like feeling. The bright spiciness of the top notes should be attributed to pepper, juniper berries, and aldehydes. There's a slight tingle from the cumin, but it's not heavy or stinky. While the top notes are probably the least enjoyable part of heritage to most people, I still think it top notes are nice and fizzy. The aldehydes and juniper berries give the opening a sparkling kick like a carbonated beverage.

The top notes dissipates and the mid starts to overpower into a very pleasant lavender fougere woody accord, of course with patchouli and the recognizable roughness of oakmoss (especially in the older versions). HÉRITAGE is particularly masculine, like a gentleman in formal attire standing in a sandalwood forest with yellowing leaves in the fall. Of course having said all that, the perfume isn't heavy or bold. In fact for so many notes, it's fresher than you would expect, and it's extremely well balanced. The mid and base notes are perhaps the most wonderful blend in a perfume I've ever used.

After the grittiness from the patchouli is over, it's time for the base. At this point it is extremely cozy clean with warm ambers. I'm guessing it's created by sandalwood and orris root. The amber part is actually very similar to the base notes of oriental fragrances like Tauer's l'air du desert marocain, a sweet warm amber. This base is particularly comfortable, Guerlain's fragrance others really hard to recreate--only a Guerlain can make a Guerlain.

Note that this use of patchouli was particularly elegant and educational. It can be perceived that Chanel's 2007 Coromandel and the later Xerjoff Richwood would have borrowed the use of patchouli from Heritage. Guerlain itself used a similar patchouli in LIDGE. The legacy that encompasses the past and future of classic French perfumery makes HÉRITAGE a masterpiece. Of course, the most similar perfume to this is Roja Dove's Danger PH, which I personally find less expressive than Heritage, although more modern. Roja's Danger has a nice top note of citrus and cumin, but that overt cumin freshness also tends to make you dizzy. The ambergris backbone in the mid and base of Danger is not as full as the sandalwood and amber used in HÉRITAGE.

Lwjm

TL;DR: an exquisite, complex patchouli-based fragrance, that always seems to reveal another layer or facet each time I wear it. Performance is modest, but so is the price. One of my absolute favourite scents.

==================

Reviews on here are strange. The person below me thinks it's a carnation bomb, yet members who've voted on notes think 15 other notes smell more strongly than that.

And they do - it makes some sense to benchmark your own views against others, just to check you're not being daft. (That could work both ways - if fragrantica is foolish enough to list "pebbles" and "pollen" as notes, be wise enough to recognise that you don't know what those things smell like...)

This is a beautiful scent - I really love it. In some ways, if you've got Zino, Lapidus and/or Beau de Jour, you don't need this. And yet if you have them, in fact, you DO need this, because clearly you love patchouli, lavender, sandal, vanilla concoctions.

If you DON'T have Zino or Lapidus, they're a cheaper, more "balls to the wall", last all day comment on this scent family.

Zino, for example, will do a lot of what this scent does, in a bigger way, and for £15. And it's by Almairac, FFS.

PapaTLooch

If you don't like carnation you won't like this. Although I'm usually not a big fan of the somewhat strange, waxy scent of carnation I find it to be very smooth, creamy and pleasant in the EDT. The opening is a little off-putting but the dry down becomes so calm and soothing. After an hour it mellows and smells like I washed myself with a very luxurious French soap. Definitely not a safe blind buy but definitely worth sampling.

MSC99

It was a sudden blind buy due to a very low price I saw on a reliable online store (~$45) for the square bottle reviews.

I agree that it has a barbershop / old school essence yet it is not offensive and indeed smooth. It has a warm comforting sweet nostalgic scent, perhaps even intimate that I can imagine one would use after a shave or a shower - especially used during the evening at home and around family.

Having said that… I think it’s overrated and I would recommend it only for adults (40+). It just doesn’t seem fresh, seductive etc.

JayR79

A contradiction of sharp/smooth an equal play between the two and with an added earthy base. Acquired taste, old school.

Hassenali

@Kk1412 I have old vintage one

tinsky61

I know I can't add anything to this, however, this scent evolves in such an interesting way! The dry-down which is exquisite doesn't just reveal itself but amplifies off skin. It is superb.

RisingChaos

A classy spicy-woody scent. Herbal lavender and earthy coriander get a facelift of fresh citrus and pink pepper, with an undertone of sweet patchouli. A warm scent profile with a surprisingly clean and airy texture, so to speak. Moderate projection for 2-3hr, longevity 8-10hr.

kigyo

The current version only lasts about an hour on my skin. But that hour is fantastic.

aromaholic

To be honest, I didn't like the opening when I sprayed it for the first time on my body. It was just a weird combination of scents - but the drydown is just sublime. Driving to work, and even driving home 8 hours later, I would catch a whiff of the fragrance and would marvel at the fragrance. It's smooth sophistication in a bottle!

HondaMan

Square bottle - my new favourite, lasts ages, premium scent with a lot of character.

Ed Fay

The best fragrance of all time.

Completely indescribable, life changing, amazing. Nothing can boost character like this!

MonicaCloud

Exudes elegance and class. Aristocratic and gentlemanly to no end. What a timeless classic. Old money as a scent.

Apache1830

Vintage 1992 125ml gold cap splash (Batch ZL 2DB 1) Bought it 45€ !!

What a fragrance.

Compared to the current version, you can feel the oak moss in the background.

In my earlier current version review, I said that it was missing something, like if the fragrance was too clean.
Like if it was too much top-heavy.
This version solved the problem.

What can i say of this fragrance... The reviewer below said it best, it's clean, fresh, sparkly.

You NEED to dress up to wear it. It's not a T-shirt scent (like almost all Guerlain's I tried).

But, if you wear this, on top of impeccable clothing code, my friend, you reach the paroxysm.

Don't know what notes I can give you, there's so many I can't extract anything. Maybe Sandalwood, Amber, Oak moss, Patchouli, Lavender and the famous Guerlinade that gives this vanillic aspect. You clearly smell Shalimar in it.

I can see why people compares it to Zino and Beau de Jour. But this one is on another league. It's much more than those two who seems both linear compared to this one.

And the drydown... Should be forbidden to smell that good

It's not old-school. It's Classic. Timeless. I can portray a modern well dressed man wearing it, a 1920' Parisian Gentleman wearing it, a 18th century Landlord wearing it ...

It's a masterpiece.

10/10

Apache1830

Square bottle.
I love it ! Classy, warm, masculine with that Shalimar vibe, Guerlain DNA.
But it misses a little thing, a little dirtyness, a little darkness, to be perfect imo.

A scent to wear when you get dressed, not casual.
And that's the problem. I don't know when I would wear it tbh. It's like YSL Tuxedo. If you're not the kind to dress well daily, it's a frag that you'll be wearing 2 or 3 times a year.

An excellent blend anyway.

About a year ago I ordered a sample of Heritage edt from an online decanter and honestly I was on the fence about it. I found the opening a bit unusual and I just wasn't sure in what settings I would wear it. But after trying a sample of Roja Dove's Danger eau de parfum--which is expensive, amazing, and very similar to this Guerlain classic--I decided to sample Heritage once again. This time I fell in love with everything about it, particularly the long-lasting and magical dry down, which is perhaps the best I've ever experienced in a fragrance. It's certainly right up there with the legendary dry downs of Bois Du Portugal and New York Intense, Chanel's gorgeous and musky 1957, and the sneaky good and underrated Dior Homme 2020. From my sample, I find that Heritage can persist on clothes for well over 8 hours, making for a noble guardian of every jacket, sweatshirt, and less frequently washed item in my wardrobe. But the dry down isn't the only great thing about Heritage edt. The entire fragrance journey is sublime; from the dusty, earthy, and slightly citrusy opening to the rich patchouli and floral accents in the heart, Heritage has many beautiful faces from which to choose. How good is Heritage edt, upon further review? Good enough that I finally (and quite happily) decided to pull the trigger on a 3.3 oz bottle despite having 40+ fragrances in my collection, and promising myself I'd never add anything above 1.7 oz ever again.

Now a word of caution. The bottle I received has a wooden cap and a batch code of 2AC1 which is from January of 2022. Guerlain has since repackaged Heritage into a square bottle and I have no idea how that one smells or performs, but I can say that the wood-cap bottle, while fantastic and similar to my sample in almost every way, doesn't have quite the same persistent, magical dry down as my sample, which has me wondering if Heritage edt has become a casualty of reformulation. It would be a real shame if it has--and hardly uncommon these days--but if anything in my collection warrants purchasing a vintage bottle to find out, and simply to have as a treasure, this would be it.

Mawm

This is my all time favorite scent. Masculine. Well blended. classic. Timeless. It takes me on a ride through the opening to the dry down everytime. Its borderline intoxicating to me.

Stoic

Timeless classic masterpiece and absolutely not dated or old. Takes you on a fragrant, aromatic, spicy journey and finishes in a very smooth and one of the best dry-downs you can get. Classy smell and a real pleasure to wear. Pure understated, stylish, masculine elegance, good for the office and social occasions with a solid performance and great value.
Roja's Danger is similar and borrows from Heritage but is hugely more expensive.

Heritage is one of my forever scents. This is a gem.

AaMac

Classy, elegant, and reminiscent of a classic manly fougere without being redundant. Much smoother than a typical barbershop scent, featuring a base of creamy sandalwood and patchouli. Opens up bright but not sharp with lemon, and lavender surrounded by masculine florals and spices. Very pleasant, never harsh. A beautiful blend. This is one of my absolute favorite classic fragrances 10/10

MitHsur

I bought my first bottle 5 or so years ago, and didn't reach for it that often. I lived in LA and the heat just makes the EDT and EDP project to much. Having moved back to NYC, its perfect and wear it often. Its usually spoken about as a formal or suit-type fragrance, but post Covid I don't follow those rules any longer. A sweatshirt and jeans and Heritage to make it an outfit. I don't need to describe except the EDT does project much more than the EDP, so if you don't want that - go with the EDP. I find the same happens with Shalimar - the EDT is too loud on me, while the EDP is much more comfortable and cozy. Maybe its a Guerlain thing. JP Guerlain really did put everything he had in the Guerlain vault in this one (except Vetiver) and the result is magic. You can read the ingredients yourself - but its elegant, warm, comforting, commanding and yes, sexy. Its underrated; if you know, you know.

Lasting power on this one is unbelievable. Longest lasting fragrance that I own. It lasts for days and smells good.

This fragrence has nothing to do with Shalimar, cant stand Shalimar, Shalimar smells like burnt rubber while Heritage is class in a bottle, smells elegant, it's not heavy and nothing is burning.

I am on the trip of discovering some oldies, just for the reference point sake. I dont have a hope of finding something amazing, since most of oldies never truly worked out for me - but not opposed to a positive surprise.

Heritage is not that "ancient" as some might say, but it is a classical fougere. Fresh, a little soapy fragrance with gentle contrasting herbs and spices that are not that easy to call out. It is both ethereal and very present at the same time. This gives a vibe of a clean man after shaving ritual. No animalic notes.

Not being a fan of fougeres personally, but being familiar with the genre, it didnt bring anything new to the table. Yes it might have been 'nice' when released but nowadays it is simply redundant and chypre is a superior genre anyways.

I would encourage people to find a sample if they are interested, but discourage of blind buying or chasing the vintages at hyper prices they are offered at nowadays.

Peter The Fragrance Lover

My review is of the new square bottle.

For many years, I've only tried and owned the Eau de Parfum version of Guerlain Heritage, but this is my first bottle of the Eau de Toilette. Since I've already written a full review on the EDP version, which is very similar to the EDT's scent profile, there really is no reason to fully review the fragrance again.

But, I will reiterate that this is one of Guerlain's finest men's fragrances, and in my humble opinion, one of the greatest, most elegant, and refined gentleman's fragrances available on the market today, and I'm happy to have it in my collection.

If you have tried either or neither of these two fragrances and you wonder what the differences are between the EDP and EDT version, then read my (relatively) short review below.

Both are patchouli-centric or patchouli-dominant fragrances that are woodsy and semi-sweet with a prominent sandalwood note and some gourmand notes.
Both EDT and EDP carry essentially the same recognizable Heritage DNA.

The difference being, that EDT is lighter, fresher, cleaner, and mory airy, and has a significantly better sillage and projection, but a mediocre longevity of 3-6 hours on my skin.

The EDP version is thicker, denser, heavier, more intense, and has more body, weight, and texture to it, with limited sillage and projection, but with a significantly better longevity of maybe 7-10 hours on my skin.

The EDT has a very weak and subtle lavender note in it and almost no detectable vanilla. The EDP has a dominant lavender-vanilla accord, which doesn't exist in the EDT version, and can be quite cloying in hotter weather but quite lovely in colder weather.

Is it worth having both? If you're a fan of both, yes. Otherwise, either version is more than sufficient.

The answer depends on what's important to you. If you merely want the Heritage scent profile, you could go with either.

If you want a lighter version without the lavender-vanilla accord and with better sillage and projection but with mediocre longevity and a thin and diluted scent profile, go with the EDT version.

If you want a thicker, denser, and heavier version that sits close to the skin, has a strong and prominent lavender-vanilla accord, and has a longevity of 4–6 hours, go with the EDP version.

Just like the EDP version, the EDT smells like old money and French aristocracy in a bottle.

Refined, elegant, smooth, well blended, and gentlemanly. Definitely a formal suit and tie fragrance for gents well into their 30s and above, and in similarity to the EDP, the EDT is best suited for colder weather, which means essentially spring, fall, and winter.

Nonetheless, both versions of Heritage are masterfully done fragrances, but none of them is really my cup of tea.

Final score: 8/10.

Reminds me of the library in Coimbra, Portugal...one of the oldest university's in the world with centuries old books in a dark, atmospheric, library with wood shelves and dusty books. Patchouli, genteel old world powderiness from a lost time and age, soft creamy sandalwood, hints of lavender and citrus deep in the background.

Very nice, but not sure when and where I would wear it. Maybe on an elegant night out to a wine bar or to the ballet. Something upscale and genteel, with a nice sport jacket and a lovely, delicate date.

Comparing this with Jicky. Jicky is more unique, unisex, and artistic in a perfumey way. Heritage is more masculine, more straight forward, and woody. Love them both, but neither are what I could consider dumb reaches day to day.

Scent: 8 / Sillage: 7 / Longevity: 7

Child Chemist

One for the country club. Smells very rich, classic, masculine-woody. I smell juniper right away and velvety soft woods. I imagine this is what someone would wear when trying to make a good impression or be respectful; Heritage is very safe. Leans formal. Gold cap formulation.

Mcscotty

The opening is ok. Has that gourmanidish lavender blend that you find in Zino, TF BDJ, and Lalique Homme (Lion). That lingers for a while with the smell of dusty books and roses, which become more prominent in the drydown. Not really a fan of this one. If you're looking to explorer some of the great Guerlain classics try Vetiver, Habit Rouge EDT or Eau de Guerlain. Pass on this one. It is what is. A mix of perfumes from the past that seem to clash and lack direction.

Fragaddict123

That’s a good one
It is a softer maybe more sophisticated davidoff zino
You simply cannot shake the similarity after wearing it for a while
The difference between the two fragrances is that zino blasts with a big lavender in the opening but this one is a lot less loud
And the both share the patchouli in the dry down
A gentleman’s scent through and through
Longevity is very good
It projects for a good while
The big question is if you have zino do you need it
No
But if you couldn’t stomach the harshness of zino this will give you a smoother experience

Trueblood84

Guerlain Heritage is class in a bottle, it smells natural, projects great, and lasts for 12+hrs off my skin. It's scent is both timeless and nostalgic at the same time for me and will always be in my collection. 10/10

Corban Lucas

Spicy fir, sandalwood, citruses and patchouli. Signature scent worthy and quite versatile.

However, I don't get the comparison to Zino by Davidoff. To me, Zino is more lavender/patchouli and is a bit dated. Heritage has a modernity to it. Great scent!

Thesmallestaromaticfeline

I blind bought the new square bottle a month ago and when I smelled the opening, I got a little bit disappointed, as it reminded me of Jaguar Classic Gold which I also own a bottle of.

After all, I can say it was a successful blind buy. I love the drydown. It’s classic, elegant and comforting. Everyone is right, that it’s a more mature and experienced man’s scent, but I’m 19 years old and I enjoy wearing this so much. I would reach for this instead of the modern blue fragrances any day.

The performance is surprisingly good. I applied this in the morning and still got a compliment at 5’o clock in the afternoon.

2022 formulation (square bottle).

This goes beyond the barbershop and into the boardroom thirty floors above it. Surprisingly, though, Héritage is softer and less leaden than the aggressive masculine orientals of the bad old days. It hits somewhere between Obsession for Men and one of those misty-eyed niche things at Sephora with names like "Cigar Shop 1963". A spicy green lavender/tobacco opening leads to an amber-tinted patchouli/cedar/sandalwood drydown. Properly opaque and well-blended so as not to be easily parsed (although I just did; it took me time), slightly powdery and exuding that classic Guerlain glow. It's pure class, but not stuffy about it. Héritage is smooth and sociable, sitting comfortably on the skin, drawing in instead of gassing out. A must-try for masculine oriental lovers and wearers of brown suits. Keep a bottle on your dresser; it elevates the space.

[Edit 2/29/24: If you like what the current version of Héritage EdT is doing but would prefer a little more earthy depth and saturation, it might be worth it to seek out a vintage bottle, as I recently did. From someone who has precious little patience for the attendant headaches and heartaches of going on vintage safari, this is a notable statement. The overall character of the scent is the same - Guerlain does an excellent job with their reformulations, all factors considered - but there's a robustness, a mossy tartness, a peppery leathery patchoulified funk that's a bit lacking in the current Héritage, which feels softer and more hazy. Is any of this deal-breaking? No. I'll happily wear my 2022 Héritage when my gold-capped, stoop-shouldered bottle runs dry. But for Guerlain gurus and gamblers, it's something to consider.]

bradsapho

Excellent perfumery, has a distinct smell i'm so familiar with. Unfortunately for me, that smell is too dated for my nose (23) and i had to move on from it - although i can definitely appreciate how well blended & pleasant the fragrance is. A legendary one from guerlain.

Onionmk

Here's my review at 29 years old / young and someone who doesn't mind challenging the senses. This is not a challenging fragrance but it will be challenging to pull off for someone my age as it has an old worldly feel. Afterall, it was released a year before I was born and it's scent profile pays homage to fragrances that were being worn and enjoyed long before that. That being said however, it isn't as old worldly as those fragrances - it's stuck in time somewhere in between not fitting here nor there.

On first try, it felt so familiar. Like something I smelt on a male figure as a child - it gives off a comforting and reassuring feel. I also got a similar vibe from Tom Ford Noir so I can't say for sure if this was what I smelt as I'm sure people were wearing similar scents in the late 90's.

In the opening I get a cacophony of citrus and aromatic notes along with something a little dirty and oily (civet maybe?). This is more pronounced in the EDP version but is still present here in the EDT. Thankfully this fades very quickly and gives way to lavender, some light hints of other florals and some aromatics. I can pick out coriander and black pepper. In the air it smells very complex and rich in every sense - It really does smell expensive and almost aristocratic. The whole ordeal remains quite airy and aromatic for a while - say 30 mins to an hour. After that is where the dry down magic begins to happen. It has a simple, yet amazing patchouli and sandalwood dry down which to me is timeless. Although still feeling old school at this stage, it's much less so and just downright comforting. It truly does showcase how great Guerlain is when it comes to creating a dynamic scent experience.

I've owned both the EDP and the EDT in the newer bottles with the orange labels / wooden cap. I would say the EDP skips the airy opening and heads to the dry down much quicker and therefore, appears more dense and rich. In reality I think they dry down to the same thing so they will smell identical at the 2-3 hour mark. The EDT projects for longer and appears to last a little longer too which is strange. I couldn't warrant owning both so in the end I kept the EDT and sold the EDP.

In summary- can someone in their late 20's wear this fragrance? Definitely, yes! Especially if you're in to collecting fragrances, experiencing them as art and are comfortable with patchouli. I occasionally get Deja vu when spraying this as it reminds me of my childhood. It almost feels like passing the mantle and feeling like I'm now "old enough" to wear it. It also got me a compliment from a middle-aged gentleman serving us at a restaurant so it must still have some charm! I do think it wears better when dressed up too. It's a fantastic fragrance I'm glad is still around. I won't be wearing it all the time but when I do it will be for my own experience. Overall a solid 8.5/10

Kuldeep S

Strong resemblance to Jovan sex appeal and zino Davidoff. Also in same line with lalique pour homme lion and very remote similarity of dry down to Terre d Hermes edt.
Longevity is good 12 hours on clothes but projection is not strong in Indian rainy season.
Its smell is very pleasant in air compared to sniffing it directly on clothes.

Steven221283

For older gentlemen. Or old school gentlemen. Definitely not for anyone who likes their modern fragrances or is below the age of 30 (although I'm 38 and it's still too "classic" for me too). It doesn't smell bad or anything, it's just not for me, I'm not big into those classic, old school, vintage kind of scents. I pick up the amber and lavender notes more than anything, some patchouli and oakmoss with a hint of sandalwood. If you enjoy smelling like your classic "gentleman" then this will be right up your street. Tested from the new square bottle, by the way.

Petrol00

The sillage of the heart and drydown on skin is the magical part. The part that other people smell on you. Classic, clean, sweet, masculine, regal, unique. I got positive compliment from a young lady. Most newer fragrances are the opposite, very good opening and dusty, boring drydown.

ItalianRefinement

New square bottle tested. As owner of the old bottle with silver cap (as here on Fragrantica page), dating back to 2012, here the comparison at first sniff. First of all, it is not radically different, the structure is here and the feeling is the same. But. Don’t know if this is airport olfactory fatigue due to muscular fragrances, but this new version seems to suffer of some potency issues as recently complained by the community. I will retest soon, but could not feel the urgency to buy a new bottle. Message to Guerlain House (Jelck or Thierry): we know you really do your best to survive the severe restrictions of the European regulations. We praise your work so much. Please bring it back as a masterpiece.
P.S. with so many houses scaling up concentration in EDP or even Parfum ( Hermes, Dior, Chanel...) sometimes it’s just indeed olfactory fatigue. But this is the competition and the evolving fragrances landscape. A twist in strenght could indeed help a great deal.

VETTIVAER

Guerlain Héritage is for those who enjoy the sophistication and blending of Habit Rouge, but want something brighter and less musty smelling.

Héritage opens with citruses and sweet lavender, softened by florals and a touch of spice for warmth. But the beauty is really in the gorgeous dry down - sandalwood, amber, tonka and a hint of vanilla.

A union of past and present, youth and legacy, Héritage is elegant, brilliant and classy. This is a scent that can really accentuate someone with abundant charisma.

Being a classic French style composition from Guerlain, expect transparency, medium to intimate projection and a lifespan of 6-8 hrs.

brokesta911

Guerlain Heritage (1992) - Guerlain Classic Hits - #jeanpaulguerlain got inspired from using 4 generations of Guerlain perfumes to create this scent as an homage to his family’s legacy. Heritage at its heart is a smokey, spicy, amber, and sandalwood fragrance. Yet, has nuances from #guerlainjicky ‘s lavender, #habitrouge citrus cologne opening, and #shalimar ‘s leathery, balsamic and vanillic base. One of my favorites.

Luna_J

@Scentsibilities: My experience of the EDP is that it has a similar performance to that of the EDT... perhaps (as is typical with an EDP) a little less volatile projection and a little more endurance from a heavier base. Where the EDT has a drier, more textual quality (an unsweetened cocoa-like patchouli combined with a very dry sandalwood), the EDP has a more evident resins, warm spices (pink pepper) and ambers, and, with these, a hint of the vanilla-like sweetness so commonly used as a support for sticky ambers. Though not 'sweet' per se, it feels a bit more rounded and sensual, with perhaps a more pronounced "Guerlinade" effect. I hope that this helps!

Advaitaforever

Underwhelming, generic balsamic dry down …. Kind of flat.

SEVERT

does not worth the hype for the price. if you go instead to davidoff zino, that s another story. totally worth the price and, somehow, for me at least, even the scent is better

Kk1412

Currently, I've got three bottles of héritage, a bottle of the 2013 version with the silver cap, a bottle of 2019 wooden cap a bottle of 2020. 2019 and 2013 bottles do not have a huge difference, but the 2020 version of the fragrance is watered down at about 10-20% to my nose...

I've also got a flat vintage 1993 75ml bottle on the way.

This is my favorite scent. The beginning is the cold spicy feeling brought by peppercorn, lavender, aldehyde. It has this dirty-not-dirty undertone to it that definitely won't make people hate it. The middle turns into a very comfortable woody tone, of course with a bit of patchouli that is extremely recognizable and a little bit rough around the edges. This fragrance is very masculine and feels like a gentleman in formal attire. The middle and base, besides the roughness of the patchouli, are extremely clean, rounded, and mature woody-amber. Towards the very end, there is a similar clean-elegant feeling I get in the creed's GIT base. I'm guessing it's sandalwood and iris/root that created this.

I would say this one you could wear any time of the year except for hot summer days. Performance is pretty decent on clothes.

Enrium

Héritage is, quite simply, an excellent masculine scent that isn't a citrus cologne. Extroverted yet elegant, it is a amber-patchouli scent at heart, featuring possibly the best use of patchouli I have come across. It reminds me in parts of two Frédéric Malle scents I admire - the patchouli from Monsieur and the forest accords of French Lover, but Héritage is superior in my opinion. I have a vintage miniature.

Héritage opens with a gorgeous lavender note, brightened by soapy aldehydes and citrus notes. It is quite aromatic and green, with damp herbal notes bringing it to fougère territory. Pine-like, woody nuances are bolstered by warm balsamic accords, making for a rich, complex blend of notes. The hint of violet is pitch-perfect - adding its distinctive delicate powdery-petal scent to the forest-like accord of the opening.

As it develops, patchouli becomes dominant, green and wonderfully earthy. Peppery geranium, alongside gently nose-tickling spicy notes complements the warm, earthy greenness. Orris root and lily-of-the-valley are the most obvious florals to my nose - the orris picks up where the violet leaves off, while muguet adds a soft, fresh green floral. A dewy green rose note features cohesively without taking from the masculinity of this scent. I don't get much jasmine - just shades of aromatic green with the aforementioned points of interest.

The drydown is woody, with warm, dry sandalwood coming to the fore, bolstered by resinous notes. It becomes ambery and spicy as it dries down further, with a whisper of patchouli remaining. It fades to a dry, musky skin scent after several hours. Sillage is moderate and longevity is day-long.

One of my all-time favourite masculine scents. Quiet gravitas in a bottle. For self-assured gentlemen of all ages, this is a timeless classic. Sensual yet utterly chic. 5/5.

Scentsibilities

I am looking to buy this fragrance however I need to decipher what is better,in terms of longevity and projection as well as overall smell this or the EDP?

ragtimerye

10/10 - This has to be one of the best men's fragrances ever. It's a little bit Beau de Jour (with toned down lavender) that has been mixed with Bracken Man (minus the overpowering cloves). It's just a fantastic scent and even has some florals. Does not smell like a grandpa either, so don't be afraid of that. It smells like a successful, confident man.

Dang11

What an amazing scent (and at a bargain too!) It's definitely a mature scent profile and is probably geared towards the 25+ crowd. Imagine a mature man with immaculate tailoring, a nice Omega watch, and probably some sort of people leader. He's bold, but not obnoxious. He's lets his presence be known, but is not loud. A man of few words, but when he does say something, it carries a lot of weight. That's is what Heritage does for me.

Roja's Danger is obviously the much more refined version, but at this price point, you'll get the most bang for your bucks with Heritage.

10/10 in my book!

umeshkalia

One of my favourite perfumes. It is a masculine perfume. It is meant for mature men. It will suit a person who carries authority like a CEO. It is powdery in nature. It is an aromatic perfume which opens with notes of strong note of Lavendar, Aldehydes, Lemon and Violet. This is taken over by strong Patchouli, Pepper and Rose notes after an hour or so. After 3 - 4 hours powdery notes of Sandalwood, Amber, Cedar and Musk become prominent. The perfume pushes out strongly during the first four hours due to strong notes of Lavendar, Patchouli, Aldehydes, Pink Pepper and Rose. However, after that it sits close to skin and becomes powdry in nature. But you can smell it for next 6 to 8 hours and people coming within 2 feets of you will definitely smell it. It is a scent that can be safely worn to office. It is a scent that can be worn in any season and any time of the day.

Jerre

Much appreciation for this one. It is a calming and gentle scent with solid performance. Aptly named as well. It feels like something that would be a heritage. Its neither old nor young. A little green, a little floral and a little woody. What is not to like about that? If I went to a dentist and the dentist was sporting this... I would be totally relaxed because I know that a man wearing this sophisticated fragrance would be a true professional. This screams "you can trust me".

I wore this to work (12hour) and at the ten hour mark when I thought it was all gone... out of nowhere I get a "you smell good". Just because YOU can't smell it doesn't mean others won't. This was there the whole time and even when I got back home after 14hours. very pleased with this performer!

I think its an all occasion and all seasons fragrance. Well done Guerlain!

Longevity 9.5/10
Sillage 9/10
Scent 7.5/10
Overall 9.2/10

confluent qualia

A chameleon of a fragrance, it smells like everything and nothing else at the same time. I think contradictory would be a good word to describe this. I see why the name is an homage to classics like Shalimar, L'instant, Mitsuoko, and Habit Rouge (among others). It has characteristics of these scents.

It opens with citrus and florals: I'm getting bergamot, clary sage, juniper, geranium, carnation, lavender. It's also quite sweet--perhaps vanilla and/or benzoin resin. The drydown brings out the patchouli for me, yet retains the sweetness and some of the florals. It has a powdery character that some may like or dislike. It rouses some memory in me that's hard to place. Perhaps it has characteristics of the old Polo formulation?

To me, it's quite smooth, if not a bit sweet, but that's the hallmark of most Guerlain fragrances. That sweetness is in contrast to more bitter and bracing herbs and florals like the juniper, sage, geranium, and patchouli. Personally, it might lean too powdery and sweet for everyday wear, but this is just an initial impression. I did try layering it with L'eau Boisée, which gives it effervescence that enlivens and adds dimension (a youthfulness perhaps). This is by no means necessary. I just may need to sit with this one for awhile longer.

Trendkill97

Very close to Danger, this coming out way before, I see how Roja Dove took the formula and balanced it out making it very refined and elegant, you can definitely tell the difference in quality with the ingredients Roja uses. Heritage is a little more sharp in the opening, feels mature, and sophisticated while still being rough and unrestrained in a way, atleast initially. Towards the dry down it starts feeling more tamed and stays professional and classy throughout. For the price, and all things considered, this is a blissful scent, bound to garner positive attention amidst slightly older audiences. Overall, a stellar formula. One of the most sophisticated DNAs in perfumery, and rightly so, in my Top 5 from Guerlain.

jlewis123

Let me first say that I am not one to hound over reformulations and drove on and on about how the vintage was so much better yadda yadda. Most of the time, the current formulation is just as good in my opinion.

However, on the rare occasion I will concur with vintage perfume evangelists and I'm afraid this is one of those times. I must confess that the current formulation is really not up to snuff when it comes to having known the vintage gold cap/gold atomizer version of the early 90s.

The sandalwood was much more prominent in the gold cap and now the scent is more lavender forward. Overall the current smells nice, but it feels neutered, watered down and lacking depth. It definitely is missing the sandalwood.

The vintage bottles can still be found, but if you want don't want to bother searching one out, the true vintage Heritage experience can be had in Roja Dove's Danger Parfum Pour Homme. It is the vintage version resurrected in its entirety. I have both the vintage 1992/3 version of Heritage and Danger Parfum Pour Homme and they are identical.

Say what you want about Roja, but he has brought back several great fragrances from the dead. They are rebranded and expensive, but I am grateful that these accords can live on without the FOMO that abounds in todays fragrance community.

Hermez

An aromatic, dry and woody patchouli. However, there’s a green aspect to it that might throw you off. Definitely not for the younger crowd.

gentel

This is an old-timey blend that unfortunately has too much in the way of unpalatable spices and herbs. I think that the pepper, pink pepper, and juniper are the main suspects. These sorts of gritty herbs and spices make fragrances a lot less smooth and a lot less palatable. Shalimar remains my #1 Guerlain

E.H.Tersono

I have a personal issue with scents like this because I just get "Polo" from them. It's because it was the first scent of this type I ever experienced, and everything like it falls into that category for me. It's a sweet barbership smell, perfectly nice, just not interesting. It's that old bottle of Avon aftershave in your grandparents medicine cabinet. But why is it that scent? Because it's classic, and based on classic ideas about what fragrances like this should be. A lovely scent, but not for me.

Zinc2004

I’m 34 and so is my wife. This is her favorite from my collection.. and I think my profile is up to date... You can easily pull this off as a youngish guy if you’ve just slightly got your act together.

There will still always be those who prefer to buy a bottle of fragrance that is grenade-shaped…

This is a really gorgeous scent and very affordable for the quality.

The meaning of intangible heritage relates to the wealth of knowledge and skills that are passed on from one generation to the next. Usually, these are a person's unique family identity: values, traditions, culture, and even items passed down from previous generations. We develop a sense of heritage throughout our lives by observing and experiencing the things that make our family or group unique. The most meaningful way to honour our group's heritage is to incorporate elements of it into our own lives.
The Guerlain perfume house has always been a reference for both its heritage of high-quality fragrances and its ability to innovate. For Jean-Paul Guerlain, it must have been a coveted but difficult decision to name a perfume after Héritage. Because of its name alone, Héritage bore much greater responsibility than other perfumes at the time of their creation. It should be a perfect or near-perfect fragrance and should be considered the icing on the cake ... And it really is an outstanding perfume.

Héritage stands for pure class and an outstanding patchouli scent. It's elegant but unpretentious! Strong but delicate! Subtle, but noticeable! Stylish but brilliant!
... and it lasts a long journey on your skin!
It's probably one of the best perfumes I've ever known. But the same goes for other Guerlain fragrances. L'Instant, Habit Rouge, Vetiver, Jicky, Shalimar, Mitsouko come to mind. This perfume is worth every penny (and ml)!
In all phases, you get strong chords that combine in perfect harmony. In the top note I notice lively lavender, light citrus fruits and a hint of juniper; in the middle note fresh spices, pink pepper and geranium; Intense, clean patchouli and sandalwood in the base note. Other notes of lesser intensity (at least for my nose) like aldehydes, moss and amber add to the cheerful complexity and beauty of this thoroughly masculine perfume.
What a wonderful mix! Launched more than 25 years ago, this fragrance continues to be a milestone honouring Guerlain's legacy. Guerlain is careful enough not to water down its older fragrances with new formulations. As for my nose, my current Heritage Juice bottle smells the same as the old one I bought 6 years ago.
Enough said! I'll probably get a new bottle as soon as possible just to be sure.

Opinion: class, heritage and beauty in one perfume bottle. Give it a try because you might like it a lot. Its versatility and ease of use could also convince you. I just don't recommend buying it blindly because of its average price right now.

for being in my basket for over a year or more, I finally got it! 😊
I can't believe no one hasn't mentioned Chanel Pour Monsieur.
I said in my CPM review that we need an intense/ extreme of Pour Monsieur, I think I found it.
heritage EDP is a must! can't believe that's been sitting iny my basket for years also.

MitHsur

I think this came out at the wrong time. It was positioned as a suit and tie, investment banker conservative fragrance and nothing could be further from the truth. I avoided it for years because its positioning was so conservative.

I started with Guerlain Vetiver, then Habit Rouge, and kept going. But Heritage is the hidden gem that seems forgotten. While Habit Rouge is called the male Shalimar, I think Heritage is. Its simply sublime, and I understand why it was not a blockbuster. So much going on, so many levels, so many notes blended perfectly so that its this gorgeous, voluptuous scent. I think its totally unisex, and not for the faint of heart or the shy. This is perfumery at its best. I have both the EDT and EDP, and I love both. I reach for the EDT more frequently because I live in California and body heat with the EDP creates projection that is just a bit too much. its not an every day scent - its not a pair of jeans. its dressy or special.

I think if this came in a Tom Ford bottle, it would be a massive, massive commercial success, and everyone would be talking about how he does modern reinterpretations of old-school frameworks so brilliantly. And then, of course, in 3 years it would be discontinued.

Vickalicious

I really like this one! It's blended so well. This opens as a spicy aromatic with prominent patchouli. In fact, the patchouli is noticeable from the initial spray to the dry down. There's aldehydes and oakmoss in the early stages, giving it a slightly soapy feel. This is also a bit powdery, which is nice contrast with the fresh, spicy notes. I also pick up lavender and corriander, particularly in the early stages. It's woody with a soft sandalwood, and the amber adds warmth. To my nose the dry down is amber, patchouli, and spices; the dry down is my favorite part! I know that this is marketed to men, but in my opinion this is unisex; I'm a female and enjoy wearing this one. Definitely a good one!

paulskez

I’m had a bottle of this and sold it, just not a dna I’m fond of. Smells a bit dated to me. I’ve sampled the new Sauvage elixir (hoping it would be very different to the original Sauvage) and it was! But to me it smelt like this! So if you’re thing of buying Heritage, have a look at Sauvage elixir....it’s like an amped up version of this.....

Héritage opens with a flourish of bright, clear, short-lived top-notes, a bit of light conversation as a pretext for an assertively worldly overture that doesn’t waste its time in arriving. In this initial aldehydic zing, a pale lemon, translucent juniper berry and geranium, and a dry, orangey-woody petitgrain compose a classy little glisten: a hint of citrus-fruitiness, a touch of terpenes, simultaneously sparkling and tight; the richness of resins is right under the surface and colours everything a rich amber. I found myself thinking of the glossy but discreet coating that antique sellers call ‘French polish’, refracting light rather than reflecting it, mediating depth.

Héritage’s main event is a lavender-patchouli-amber combination with the amber carrying a heavy dosing of non-edible vanilla. Like many others, I also see a definite resemblance to Davidoff’s fan-favourite Zino; like Zino, Héritage is rooted in patchouli as domesticated by a fougère accord of mellow lavender and hay-like coumarin, its green edges supported by clary sage and, texturing the surface of all that earthiness, a subtly saturnine thyme note, and its base given a very solid foundation of dry woods (here cedar and sandalwood in place of Zino’s endearingly old school rosewood.) I’ve owned both recent and vintage bottles of Zino and can see the same patchouli at work here in the heart: sweetly dark and chalky, like malt or carob, earthy and dusty in a way that reminds me of cacao or peat moss. Unlike Zino, however, Héritage keeps its patchouli well out of the damp basement of humid mildew with its smooth vanilla-amber on the one hand and on the other a very Guerlain-esque floralcy on the other. A key player is orris, with its buttery, lipstick-like character on the one hand and cold-hearted woodiness of the other; a petal-soft violet note adds its hint of rainy-day reflection to what is a cool-yet-arousing soapiness I associate with iris/amber combination. A touch of spice agitates these ingredients without inducing sneezes. It’s gentlemanly, certainly, but the underlying impression I get is of an appealingly earthy character mediated by a touch of both powdery politesse and suave sensuality.

And there is a lot of character here. This patchouli offers some great range, becoming almost chocolate-cakey at the beginning in a way that reminds me of rich-yet-tailored unisex patchouli-based compositions like Reminiscence or Molinard, both of which rely mainly on a heavy dose of vanilla and unguent musks to smoothen and unify. Here, heavy muskiness is sidestepped in favour of a subtle scaffolding of woody-spicy effects, rendering Héritage a warm and affable personality that manages also to be self-contained and dryly light-handed (not qualities I always associate with amber-oriented fragrances!) Like two other Jean-Paul Guerlain creations, Vétiver and Habit Rouge, the full range of Héritage’s orchestration of notes and accords as they appear in published pyramids somewhat eludes me. I’m not sure I can detect a pine note per se, but then pine and juniper have a delightful overlap so who knows? Some notes, like coriander, citric, dusty, toasty and sweet, are probably just absorbed into a supporting role of extending and enhancing a bigger narrative player – in this case, again, patchouli...But patchouli in a waxed and burnished hardwood box made with neatly fitted dovetail joints. Woody -- but not quite woodsy -- patchouli.

I like this a lot and can see myself growing to love it. Patchouli is the centre of the universe here, but it is neither of the infamous hippy-headshop-oil variety, nor does it have the almost-boozy syrupy aspect of Reminiscence's excellent product. Though modern, it is not some kind of fractional, sheer maté-like synthesis (my apologies to Guerlain L’Instant, which I objectively respect but find I cannot wear). While not conceptual nor postmodern, it is constructed with self-awareness of its place in perfume history, and is laid out with classical French rationality into a series of agreeable parts that, for all its subtle and sensible balancing of proportions, is too good to find dull. If you think you can live up to projecting a bit of authority, this would be workable as an office scent, especially if you don’t mind people supposing you must have an interesting life outside of the office, and maybe inside of it as well. Projection is strong for the first 2-3 hours or so followed by an extremely gratifying drydown that lasts at least another three or four hours; as a skin scent it is tenacious.

P.S. With respect to some folks who describe this as ‘barbershop’, I cannot see anything in Héritage that truly places it in that category. Like Zino, its patchouli-amber is supported by a fougère structure (you can smell a very similar idea at work in Tom Ford’s recent and much-hyped Beau de Jour, and a similar base under all those layers of steam and beeswax in Penhaligon’s Sartorial), but not all fougères are born to the barbershop! This is darker and more amber-y...If you think of Prada Amber for Men as barbershop (as it was, by design) than Héritage is more relatable to the myrrh-infused Prada Amber Intense (I like this comparison, as there are some interesting similarities between the Prada and the Guerlain.) Though thoroughly refined, this one is earthy enough not to insist that you shave, suit up and make small talk, though it would be a helpful ally if you had to do so. I'm wearing this tonight to dinner at a local vineyard with a chocolate brown suede jacket, camel-leather black derbies, the 'good' blue jeans, a white dress shirt and a black knitted silk tie; a richly textured but minimalistic approach seems like an appropriate accompaniment to Héritage.

P.P.S. Disregard 'old man' or 'dated' connotations...that's just cyclical thinking. Amber-oriented compositions like Héritage, Zino, Obsession, Egoïste, Opium Pour Homme, and Givenchy Pi all hit the market between the mid 80's to late 90's. It's only natural that twenty to thirty years later they will seem especially reminiscent of someone's parents or even grandparents' generation. If this feels old to you, give yourself enough time with it to readjust your frame of reference; some things age well, other things poorly and others just...age. Héritage still deserves your attention because it avoids the clichés of overbearing 'oriental' (we need a new term!) woody-spicy ambers. I'd argue that of the above list, only Héritage and Egoïste have really remained accessibly wearable and in currently-available, high-quality formulation. It is a beautifully blended scent, perfect for autumn but likely wearable year round (except perhaps in high heat? I'll get back to you...)

P.P.P.S.: I have a recent decant of the EDP of Héritage but prefer my new bottle of the EDT. While the EDT is a cool autumn day made friendlier by a raking ray of gold-tinted sunshine, the EDP proffers a denser, more enveloping warmth…so much so that it feels related to the quasi-gourmand excesses of vanilla-balsamic powerhouses like Calvin Klein’s Obsession or YSL’s Opium Pour Homme. The EDP also presents an undercurrent of restless spiciness (such as a pink pepper note that is not nearly as insistent in the EDT) that remind me at times of the more demanding aspects of Chanel Egoïste or Tom Ford Noir. All the points of reference I've mentioned are fine compositions, but they project an overt sensuality that I think distracts from what makes the concept of Héritage original: a smooth, cool-headed-yet-spirited rewriting of patchouli’s earthy gravitas, emphasizing calm, chic, stability, and care with the details, all good things to surround oneself with right now.

johnrgillen

Solid. I’ve been wearing this along with Danger and Scandal PC and while those two are more refined and distinctive, I prefer this. Similar longevity. A little less projection. Feels timeless and versatile.

Marcjohn86

This is just a great buy at under $40 which is how much I paid for my bottle, and I think you can get the vintage bottles for around $70 sometimes although I personally wouldn't pay that when the current batches they're putting out are so great. Sometimes, you gotta say no to "vintage overhype". It's fresh, it's sweet, it's smooth, and if you're a fan of fragrances like the rest of Guerlain's main mens fragrance line (Vetiver, L'Instant, Habit Rouge, Homme, etc) as well as 90s barbershop style fragrances like YSL Opium Pour Homme or even Chanel's Egoiste, then you should pick this up ASAP!

Nothing to add. Utterly superb fragrance.

Very masculine. Spicy, woody and mature. Complex. The aldehydes definitely give it an edge. Complex. Not for boys, men only.

Edit: I think the value is fantastic. Perhaps as I age and my tastes change I learn to appreciate old perceptions. Before, this was too powdery and mature for me. Now I see it as a reserved, comforting, classy and elegant cold weather scent. One good spray, under your shirt.

The powder is not like white florals or chalky or feminine. It's like still dust suspended in sun rays in a wooden attic through a very old window. Then add a bunch of lavender, some aldehydes, bunch of wood and patchouli. It's hard to pin down as it seems to shift and morph over time. It goes from dusty to creamy woody to a bit of zingy lavender and back again. Kind of barbershop.

Really good. Great value. Pretty solidly mature though. Recommend.

Riddler2112

Beautiful fragrance. Reminds me of Chanel Egoiste and Eau Sauvage Eau de Parfum together, but with more staying power. Absolute class in a bottle. Not for young men. You must have wisdom and maturity to wear this. 😉

PixelArtDeco

Sophisticated and mature without being dated. This is the kind of fragrance that makes you want to wear a fine suit and attend a high brow soiree. Well blended and warm, the patchouli stands out but not in an obnoxious way. Perfectly suited to be a signature scent for any occasion, although I wouldn't recommend wearing it on the sweltering hot summer days.

Robusto

Not gonna lie, I dismissed everything "Guerlain" after sampling Vetiver, Habit Rouge, and most of the L'Homme line. I recently ordered a few decants of other fragrances and Heritage EDT was included as a bonus but I immediately put it to the side. A few weeks later I decided to revisit some decants I put to the side and decided to spray Heritage on the back of my hand after the kids went to bed. Shortly after I sprayed it, I'm going down the rabbit hole of where I can find the best deal on a new bottle!! LOL

This is one of the most opulent/masculine/sophisticated fragrances I've ever had my nose on! It has a sliver of that "Guerlain" retro DNA that I remember from Vetiver, Habit Rouge, and L'Homme.....but the patchouli/amber/oak moss/incense sets it apart and lures me right back into bliss! I'm only working off of a decant of this at the moment but I have a full bottle coming in shortly.

As one of the reviewers said below, this fragrance is very satisfying. Smell is subjective and everyone feels satisfaction in a different way. This checks all the boxes for what makes me fall in love with a fragrance and feel "satisfied".

Do yourself a favor and pick up a decant of this. If you're into rich/opulent fragrances that don't smell outdated, this should be right up your alley.

Cheers!!

I wore this regularly for about five years. I think it's a masterpiece of fragrance.
I don't particularly like the cacophonous opening, this one is all about the wearing of the scent and the scent aura or cloud. This means I cannot sit with it on my arm and sniff it to fully grasp the fragrance as I may be able to with some of my others. The difference between sniffing this up close and letting the whole concoction waft gently into your nose is substantial.

I was in France and asked a friend for suggestions on fragrances. I exclaimed that I was bored, none of the recent releases excited me, where are all these masterpieces? I had tried all the supposed classics and many seemed dated to my nose or simply unpleasant. He suggested I try heritage which I sprayed on and waited to dry down. The opening is dense and dusty, it's like arriving too early at a concert and they're still setting up the stage and lighting, I feel as though I'm seeing unfinished and raw elements of a final composition.

I specifically use the word composition because this fragrance most closely resembles a finely detailed piece of music with distinct stages of development tied together as one length of sound.
I continued that day in France with heritage on my arm and thought nothing more of it, I had been told it was good by a trusted source so I gave it a lot of time. On the plane as I sat down I sniffed again and decided it was good, checked online and ordered a tester bottle from eBay for a great price.

At the time I thought it was fine, I don't think I realised how good it was and certainly didn't experience it as I do wearing it now, aware of the potential development and intricacies behind each note and the nuances of the scent cloud.
I find it quite barbershop in the first few hours, a brazen slightly dusty aroma that is OK, not particularly great. It's what happens from then on that is magnificent. It's the opposite of fragrances released today that are designed to allure in the first minutes, if I hadn't been recommended Heritage I surely would have dismissed it and what a tragedy that would have been!

Now to the difficult part because I have sung its praises loudly can I back that up with an effective description of the scent? Of course not, that's what I also came to find out through all of this - my favourite scents are the hardest to describe, they refuse simple concrete summary or description. The best I can come up with as a summary is the loose and abstract phrase "plush quality comfort" which is what this fragrance has become for me.

It is a rich tapestry of scent, a complicated yet organised symphonic medley where every movement contributes to the whole experience. Once it settles into the main phase the scent is delicate, incredibly well balanced and remains reasonably discrete to the wearer as well as lasting all day on me.

Undefinable and warrants repeat wearings for a better understanding, the moment I think I have it and understand the fragrance it evolves further or shows another layer and aspect of itself. For me this is the mark of a truly excellent perfume; depth and development that defy easy classification and instead demand time and careful attention which is ultimately worthwhile and very, very, satisfying.

JamesBeach

Patchouli is the most conspicuous element. There's a lemon-vanilla-bergamot powderpuff confection at its core that I recognize from Shalimar and Habit Rouge, more or less, and the lavender cuts a barbershop facet. I can detect the pepper, which no doubt tempers the powder somewhat. And there's a vaguely woodsy musk at its base. The rest of the ingredients are harder to tease out.

An old guard men's fragrance, to be sure. Sports coats, clean shaves, and wristwatches. It seems like a very good thing for skin to smell like. Ultimately, it doesn't fascinate me enough.

fulopdaniel

Good advice, don't sniff it from up close. If you give it some space, the drydown is a nice sweet / spicy masculine scent. The opening is really harsh and bitter, like medicine... so don't sniff it if you don't want to hate this fragrance. If you let it just linger in the air, then you won't smell the bad part. It's worth to try, but to me it doesn't worth to own this fragrance. It's definitely dated, and not in a cool way, but just old man-ish. The bitterness of it reminds me of that chinese bug repellent old people put in their wardrobe to keep bugs away from their clothes, and then it gives them that distinct old people smell.. and that mixed with kammun and sandalwood incense. Very similar in feel to Givenchy Gentleman, but a little more sweet. The oakmoss is extremely dry and I would assume it's synthetic

NoviSad2019

Beautiful fragrance. Elegance & refinement. I love Roja Dove's perfumes, particularly Danger. Heritage is probably the only perfume I could safely recommend as a semi-substitute for Danger. If you can spare 350+ eur, go with Danger, as one reviewer rightly pointed out, it's an enhanced version of Heritage. If you're on a budget, Heritage is a killer perfume to convey elegance and sophistication. Should be in every man's collection.

I acquired a sizable sample of Heritage when I set out to learn about fragrances, but because I was not sure quite what I thought about it (other than that I liked it) I held off on writing up a review. The fragrance was so complex, as the note pyramid above attests, that I wasn't even sure I knew what I was smelling. I knew it smelled dark and rich and masculine, but I wasn't quite sure what it all meant or what the base and the heart and top were.

I've tried many fragrances since then, and have tried to work out what different notes are in them, and now I feel I have a much better sense of what this particular fragrance is. The enjoyable earthy darkness is due to the liberal use of patchouli, and the richness of the fragrance comes both from the resinous basenotes and from other elements in that marvelous "Guerlainade" so common to many (all?) of Guerlain's fragrances. The opening lavender makes it all smoother, and the other cascade of individual notes add up to a complexity in both the top and the drydown that makes the whole thing feel even more expensive than it is. This would be great to wear to a business office that insisted on a suit and tie, or to evening events. It still smells dark and rich and masculine.

But do I want to buy a whole full bottle? I must confess I prefer the same house's Habit Rouge, which is as refined and elegant but which also takes me more through a specific journey of which I could never tire, and where the dominant notes are more easily distinguishable. Maybe I'll feel differently about this one in time as my nose becomes even more sophisticated, but I worry this is so complex it will always smell just "perfumey" to other neophyte noses. But I still really enjoy wearing this, and it will be a scent to which I will definitely return.

@ Classicslover _ Kudos for finding my review and responding right away....to clear the smoke.

Only a fool would purchase a Guerlain on Amazon or Ebay. They are usually the next in line to start a thread " Is this a real Guerlain ? "
Such a silly recommendation. I would never tell anyone to waste money like this. Brick and Mortar or directly from the company. If you cannot buy a fragrance that way then its either gone for good or a ghost fragrance made by rick rack 3rd party factories/sellers.
Don't be fooled by overzealous "retailers" on Fragrantica.

ClassicsLover

This is sold all over the place and easily available on ebay and amazon. I recently bought my husband a botte of the eau de toilette, so I should know. I purchased off ebay and my husband says it is exactly the same as the bottle he purchased in a department store. Anyway, why buy it from Guerlain and pay the inflated price when you can pick up a bottle for less than half that elsewhere? That doesn't make sense to me unless you don't care and have money to burn.

Ed Fay

@gospodinov_s WTF are you talking about?

Perfumelover15

An absolute classic for a gentleman! Balanced and so elegant, it can be a perfect companion for day and night. It can be described as spicy woody fragrance and also as Fougere, as you have the citrus and lavander at the beginning and then the patchouli and tonka in the base notes. Created in 1992 it has many similarities to one of the best male perfumes from the epoch of the 90s, the woodiness of Zino Davidoff, the elegance of Chanel pour Monsieur Concentre and Escada pour homme, the spiciness with coriander of Egoiste, a touch of the sweetness of Minotaure by Paloma Picasso, but even though it reminds me a bit of all these fragrances, it is an original and typical Guerlain! The original version is one of the best perfumes for men! And one of the first to have Eau de Parfum for men back then!

gospodinov_s

Best Frag for Cigar Lounge evening! Classy ! If you must show level to the young generations with long barts but with shaved legs and balls.

daleckijacek

Unfortunately it is not a fragrance for me. I can't stand the opening which is very harsh and somehow unpleasent for me. I blind bought it hoping it will be nice mellow citrus fragrance with lot of woods. It is not like that. Yes it is citrus you can smell in the opening but citrus with lavender, and aldehydes which comes to me like an old furniture. It's not fresh, it's not sweet, it's not cosy.

The good side is that after the messy opening the drydown is much better but also dry. Even if i smell this i can feel a dry taste in my mouth. It's like Terre d'Hermès without refreshing bitter orange, plus patchouli with a poor silage.

Is it a crow pleaser? No. People here said that it is very well blended masterpiece. For me it is very messy before the drydown hits.

7/10 - just because i can't see myself wearing this one I think that probably my Grandpa could rock this very well.

Edit: after 2 days of wearing this I must admit that longevity of this is very good. I still don't like the harsh opening but the drydown is really oldschool lavender with a lot of woods. Very classy. I will give it 8/10 - definitly for more mature people.

Mr. Boston

This fragrance is one of the best Guerlain mens fragrances ever created. It is so well blended, considering the number of notes, its truly an amazing presentation. I disagree with the review below that there is no aspect of this smells "old man" - it smell like pure refined class. Simply gorgeous. 10/10.

JohnnyFunk69

This is one of the hardest fragrances to describe. It projects and lasts long but is very airy and smooth and doesn't really hit you in the face. It opens with a very old man smelling barbershop smell but then quickly opens up into a very rich, elegant masculine aura. I can't really describe the smell. It is so well blended that I can't make out any individual note. It is kind of a sparkly, floral manly well put together scent. This is definitely classy but I don't see any reason you couldn't wear this at work or casually. It is definitely quality.

Ksj_

Classy, mature, and very beautiful. Guerlain is one of the greatest fragrance houses to ever do it. Respect where respect is due.

byronic80

Blind bought, this was a surprise. I was expecting a fougere, more bright, citrusy. What I get is a warm patchouli, complex but everything is amazingly blended. There is a floral note in there, a kind of iris (the orris root?), but it seems to morph with the patchouli and lavender into a dense but not overbearing core that is still one of the finest and most distinguished things on the market.

Beautiful.

EDT, 2020 batch.

gavrilvalian89

You can tell from the smell of the atomizer this is some special stuff. This is spicy, floral, aromatic, creamy/woody sandalwood done very well. The patchouli in the base with spices and florals makes this so elegant and classy. You can almost smell each individual note if you look for it and it never gets screechy or cloying. Even the current formulation is great quality and lasts 6-8 hrs with 4-5 sprays on me. It’s also not too powdery which is awesome and never feels stuffy or goes flat. Glad to have it.
8.5/10

OnThatNote...

Complex. Slightly dirty but real smooth. Nice!
I don't care for the old school sparkly atmospheric opening. Kinda too close to Old Spice's opening. Thankfully that phase doesn't last too long.
But! Boy does it change into a great fragrance after that! It's mature. It's soft and yet rough at the same time. It's a work of art. I picture wearing this on a fall day while at a black tie event or some other dress up occasion. I wouldn't say it's a grandpa sent but I would say it's not a fruity/freshie young scent either. Thankfully, mature scents like this are still out there.
The house of Guerlain is all about the good ol' days of complex scents with a very distinctive dry down. Now to be sure, I appreciate simple linear scents too but I see myself wearing something like this more often. It makes me feel like Cary Grant or another handsome well dressed gentlemen of that sort.

dangerous_notes

Heritage EDT was my 2nd Guerlain fragrance, which I bought in my early 20s. Kinda too much and oldschool for that age I must admit. The citrus openning and the rich spicy heart are excellent. The drydown is a bit too oldschool with the oakmoss-sandalwood combo making you smell a bit like a grandpa. Still a classy, old school scent for older people.

Nevertheless, this is an excellent, very formal, winter fragrance that I love. It would fit better more mature men.

Ramseysmellsgood

Im 35 and fell into Guerlain hardcore. Bought habit rouge. L'instant . Mouchoir de Monsieur . Shalimar pdt (i know) Songe du bois et & heritage vintage edt in the last 3 months. They all blew my socks off! I think if you asked me a few months back my favorite frag of all time (i have been in the game 15 years) it would be early batches of aventus the smokey batches. Now 3 month later and i think heritage vintage edt might be my all time fav frag EVER! 26 notes of pure man. Not someone who isnt sure what restroom to go into or confused about who they are. This is pure sophisticated man and i love it. Old school... poweful! Do you know when you were a child and the patriatch of the family would walk into the room and they would carry a gravitas about them? Someone you respected. They were in charge and everything is completely in control when they are around. That is the feeling this scent gives me. Comfort & familiarity. A feeling of taking control. The opening with the fizzy lavendar (jicky) and bergamont (shalimar) starts of with some old school aldelhydes but when that patchouli joins the party its spicy and chocolate brown and dry. If there was a star of the show singing lead its the patchouli. The big floral heart of cyclamen . Rose. Lily of the valley (which was on of the notes that got hit with the IFRA regulation) with violet peaking in out and old school carnation (habit rouge) is just gorgeous. How heritage can have 7 florals (i left out jasmin and geranium) and be so manly is amazing. The base of sandalwood is so creamy and calming my nose is glued to my wrist. Even my wife who hates almost all frags because they give her a migrain (she married the wrong guy) hugs me close and breathes deep when i wear heritage. Also i forgot to mention. The base has loads and loads of PROPER oakmoss. Not the fake synthetics IFRA makes modern frags use because 1% of the population might sneeze when they smell it. This is real and proper 1990s oak moss. It is an absolute honor and privilage to get to wear vintage hearitage edt. My only complaint and regret is i only bought the 50ml. I should have went for the 100 ml splash bottle because i never ever want to be without this fragrence until they put me the ground. Standing ovation from me to jean paul guerlain. 10/10. Masterpiece!

I’m just starting a Guerlain phase at 33, initiated by a fascination of my step fathers wearing of Geo F Trumper sandalwood. That creamy sandalwood is a stunning intoxicating experience.

I searched for alternatives to avoid smelling like her dad. Heritage EDT fit the bill.

Having tried both the vintage and new formulation I must say I find the vintage too dated. The new formulation isn’t so dusty and so should appeal to younger noses. Maybe less patchouli and more sandalwood. It smells rich and mature. I prefer over the citrus powder of habit rouge EDT which comes across as little too dated for modern times.

This is perfect as a signature scent or for the office for 30s+. I’m surprised I don’t smell this more on older gentlemen, who seem regular wearers of Terre D’Hermes or Aramis. This is superior in both quality and smell. I almost want to keep this a secret.

Performance is interesting. This is one I smell consistently on myself for 8 hours with subtle but noticeable whiffs when I move my head. However sillage must be low, as on paper I don’t smell it from 1-2 feet away. My partner can be sitting next to me and won’t comment but when hugging me she will comment how good I smell.

Performance - 6.5
Scent - 9

Released back in time when perfume flankers were more a novelty than a rule, Jean-Paul Guerlain had an idea to mix and match a couple of their best-sellers and create Guerlain Heritage.

One familiar with Guerlains history and their perfumes will unmistakably notice old spirits floating inside of this creation. Here are my 5 quick takes:

- Fantastic opening and good dry down
- A woody oriental perfume with great longevity
- Created by master perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1992
- Best used during colder seasons as a daytime business scent
- Feels dated but has a class

On one hand, it is a hidden gem worth checking out, and on the other, I would only recommend it to perfume enthusiasts. Also, Heritage the best after taking a shower. Crazy, right? I guess some kind of weird magic happens when this perfume mixes with water, and man oh man.

If the fragrance was this smooth as it is after a shower, it would be one of the best perfumes out there. Guess you can’t have it all.

For me this is on the edge of greatness and just because of that has a chef's table view of the real master in this category: Roja Dove Danger Parfum Cologne. They open pretty much identical cocooning you immediately in a sense of pecuniary relief at the 6 x price differential. Guerlain has saved the day you think. But after half an hour the master just takes it away. Heritage Edt becomes increasingly sweet and powdery almost powder puff and sent wafts up from my chest straight into my mask and started annoying me. Heart break.
The Roja remains sharp and masculine and lasts a lot longer as well. My only issue with it is that there are better smelling cheaper fragrances if you want the lighter type namely Mfk Masculin Pluriel . Also the Parfum Cologne is eclipsed by the Parfum version (a step up from the EDP which is discontinued) just requires a gentle dab to release one of the greatest fragrances of all time. Warm, masculine, subtle, monumental. Worth the enormous price tag? I own one.

Complex, a bit sweet and IMHO, qualified to be considered "elegantly unisex" for 35+ men or the right kind of lady to pull off. Kiddies and those who prefer modern chemical cloy-fests need not apply.

I have to say that for me, it's the patchouli that really sings in Heritage, complimented by subtle touches of florals and a slight green bitterness that just barely keeps this squarely out of feminine territory. Alone, it's almost a Coromandel sort of patchouli, but of course with very different accompanying notes. As Heritage dries down, I get alternating whiffs of a clean, barber-shoppy variety of sandalwood, a shadow of dry-ish cedar and a vanillic amber, all of which create a balance between the clean masculine and the sweet feminine aspects of Heritage. Overall, the combination of woody and floral and aldehydic notes do bring a bit of a clean, soapy sensibility, while still maintaining warmth and aromatic balance.

This has to be my favorite Guerlain classic to date, edging out L'Instant and L'eau Boisee as the most wearable and enjoyable of the lot. My only minor issue is that it can come across a bit too sweet (for me) when temperatures rise -- so I like the idea of layering with something more dry and woodsy but light enough to compliment it without overwhelming it -- like a Pal Zaleri Sartoriale (light, simple sandalwood) or Robert Piquet Bois Noir (more complex light woods+resins). With this being fairly complex, think simple in how you layer with it -- but above all, have fun and experiment!

Heritage is a true classic (but never dated) scent, with good to superb performance and value. I think there's a place for this in every gentleman's rotation, and some adventurous women's rotations, too. Thumbs up!

SmellsLikeTeenSpiritz!

I love this. It doesn't have a coca cola smell but I get a "drinking-a-coke-at-Christmas-vibe" from this. So that bubble-y, freshly poured coke fizz. Crisp in the nostrils, with a bit of syrupy darkness way, way far away. It cuts through a cold day and definitely is my longest projecting Guerlain (I have Vetiver, HR EDP, l'instant EDT). But that said, doesn't project like some other beasts. Feels natural, even if it isn't. I do get a strong smell of alcohol depending on what I'm spraying (clothes mostly, skin it goes on nice and clean). This is the only fragrance that has done this so far. I spray this 5 times, 3 times daily and I just smell great. Very unique to my nose. I grew up around Brut and Old Spice and this doesn't remind me of those at all. It's its own thing. Even comparing it to Bois Du Portugal feels strange. I love Bois, there may be some similarities on paper, but a very different effect. All my Guerlains (save L'Instant) have fallen into the dumb reach category. They make me happy and smell good and I don't feel too precious when I use them. Spray away! 10 out of 10, baby.

APJ

This is pure class in a bottle. Beautiful combination of patchouli, cedar and sandalwood. It’s quite strong but without being intrusive and cloying.
Highly recommend it for the colder months.

Mystères du Château de Dé

Holy barnyard, Batman! Staggering kitchen sink opening where the aldehydes pop plenty of those mid-notes right into the top, notably the florals and earthy patchouly. Lavender, sage and pine provide a linalool-terpene camphorous yet solid support to all the rest. Masculine, fairly unique and as close as one can get to de trop. I promise this IS too much for many. Daytime scent for an autumnal vineyard. Hunting and foraging. Not for office or indoor parties.

Brand new bottle, Heritage must be more aggressive and abstract than of yore. Well it doesn't smell old, but that means warp speed progression, too. Thirty minutes on, the lovely as always Guerlinade emerges through the chunky fauvist bravura, and lures me on a tangent to a safe and grounding barbershop. I take it as a cop out. This striking Guerlain needs a strange and compelling base that Guerlain sadly cannot bottle nowadays. OK value for the discount price but I say, make this linear from the top and hold it for 4 hours and I'd pay more.

SIRRYANROYCE

A beautiful, classy, and comforting blend from Guerlain. A Hygge-inducing scent perfectly suited for times of coziness or cold weather while wearing a soft, warm sweater.
The dry down is addicting with a creamy, powdery tone.

Overall, this is my all-time favorite cold(er) weather fragrance. And now that I have purchased the EDP version, I think I'll use the EDT for autumn and EDP for winter. Both smell similar, but the density and depth of the EDP is noticeably greater, which is why the lighter EDT is an excellent option for transitional weather.

Score: 10 out of 10

Would I purchase a replacement bottle? Absolutely, this is a must have for my collection, and is one of my favorites in my entire collection.

The opening of this scent is very similar to Habit Rouge to me, and I freaking LOVE IT!! I immediately get the carnation and rose with the aldehydes and lavender that make it more of a fougere than a woody spicy scent. In about 10-15 minutes the rose/carnation combo takes a step back and the citrus shows up, and it becomes even more of a fougere that I still love. I may be getting some of the juniper berries in there as well. For all of the pepper listed in the notes, I don't get the pepper at all, or it is blended so well that is simply lifts the other middle notes that I cannot single out. The base is all about the amber, oakmoss and musk, with the musk winning by a slight margin. This is an amazing creation, and I am so glad it was crafted for me to enjoy. Projection and longevity are average. It's not a beast on my skin. I do not get the comparisons to Zino. I love Zino as well, but I do not get the dark patchouli that I love in Zino. I read that the EDP doesn't have the citrus notes, and doesn't project well or last long. I got the EDT based on the reviews of both the EDT and EDP, and I am extremely happy that I purchased the EDT. Old school? Not at all. Classic? Only in the sense that it is a beautiful fragrance that appeals to all age groups, and is not dated. So, yes, its a classic, and I cannot recommend it enough.

EDIT: OK, after a few more wearings, I now get the Patchouli in the opening, so it starts as a combination of Habit Rouge with a hint of L'Instant. It's still amazing and the patchouli adds a little bit of a chocolate vibe. This Patchouli still never goes into Zino territory. Its not that dark. Everything else stays the same through the mid and drydown.

The Nose that Knows

I purchased this perfume from the awesome reviews it gets. It was a blind buy which I strongly don't recommend. My wife absolutely hates when I wear it.
For some reason she said...you smell old.
When I wear it to work I get 0 compliments. I even had someone say what are you wearing it stinks. Lol.
So now the bottle gets very little wear. I hate when that happens.

alanwake

I used to own the EdP at some point but gave it away, as it eventually became far too heavy and thick for my taste. This EdT is fresher, smoother, and woodier. Very elegant, very refined, a little dated, and best suited for mature individuals. I like it a lot, however, I already have TF Noir EdP, which is a darker and more modern interpretation of this. Still, for the price, there's no harm picking this one up. Excellent.

AWESOME!

the chorus of praise is deserved for a classic "manly" scent.

not sure how the new bottles stack up against the oldies, but my bottles are loud and proud. lots of notes: spice, flowers, wood. but it's the blend that creates a distinctive "guerlain" signature. while it shares much with its stable mates, it is not as perky as habit rouge (in the various iterations) and maybe the older edp is more defined, while the more recent is smoother--both perhaps a bit more sophisticated than edt (which is great and probably more flexible.)

it is a veritable feast for the nose in most situations.

Heritage is so perfect for the autumn season, although versatile enough to be worn year around. But for me, it's Autumn in a bottle all the way. Although cinnamon doesn't appear to be in the notes, it certainly has a cinnamon vibe, and it's blended in a masculine, gentlemanly composition. Absolutely perfect for the office with just a few sprays. Reminds people of festival season. No doubt, Heritage in my "Top 10 Fragrances For Life" list, if I had one... and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The best of Guerlain in my opinion. Everyone needs to get their nose on this at least once in their life. It's that good.

Ebrock19

Polite, unobtrusive, secure masculinity. For the man who is the humble boss of his life and his family.

No one note stands out. It is more a symphony of quiet confidence.

30+. Safe blind buy if you stray from aquatics and florals.

Yes it has been reformulated. No it is not the monster it once was. High value extracted for the cost invested.

the 80's called. they want their cocaine back and they'll run over a Fahrenheit tanker just to get it. as timeless as a mullet in acid wash denim.

frankincense&myrrh

Woody, refined… subtle patchouli… with just a hint of something chocolate & spice like. And the oak moss is nice! (I wonder if the sandalwood here is that of Guerlain's preciously preserved, reserve fame… for there's certainly something creamy deep within.) And yet this is nearly TOO refined for my taste. Having arrived at the patchouli party late, and finally come to appreciate its earthier nuances, I'm very pleased to have a pristine bottle of HERITAGE from 1993 to hand these days which contrasts wonderfully with bolder, bawdier patchoulis in my meagre collection.
HERITAGE goes on smooth - doesn't shout for a second - and keeps itself together "suavamente" for hours & hours from thereon, only occasionally letting slip glimpses of more raw, spontaneous facets. Manly, of controlled character… somehow I really can't see this on a woman, nor a younger bloke even… and that is something I rarely deem valid, let alone worthy of mentioning.
This may be Parisian, but for some reason I get a distinctly elegant Spanish vibe in my olfactive eye. I don't know why. A sophisticated, suave, smartly attired caballero of yesteryear charm & graceful masculinity out for an early evening stroll neath the pines of El Escorial… undergrowth crunching underfoot. He is dressed & polished to step out for a gallery viewing & theatre - and after to dine with companions - but wanted to take some air & solitude first in the purple & orange light. Strong, yet sensitively gentle. Confident, yet quietly humble. Erudite, generous, and honest. He is the distillation of all things gentlemanly.
In fact, as much as I enjoy the chivalrous sensuality of HERITAGE, I don't feel nearly well groomed nor possessing of reserved virility enough to do it justice! Next occasion I don a suit perhaps I can pull it off properly. Easily I can imagine how stunning HERITAGE must be on the right character.
My interest in the EdP is piqued.
10 hours performance at a dry 22°C. Very polite sillage.

Oye mis entusiastas amigos de Fragrantica!
Second review - can't help it!
This - a 10 year old half-full bottle of Heritage EDT that I love but wear only occasionally (coz I treasure it!) - is bloody brilliant!
It's like wearable, accessible Art! It smells sooo good - I love the sharp opening that mellows to a smooth dry down. The twists and turns as it develops. This cologne just makes me happy.
Soon, I'm gonna invest in new iterations of both the EDT and the EDP - just coz I wanna!
Do I love this as much as Antaeus, Bel Ami, Egoiste, the original YSL pour Homme? Oh yes, it's definitely on a par. And while I like and respect Vetiver and Habit Rouge - I MUCH prefer this!
In these straitened times, it's a treat to find something so small and seemingly innocuous to lift ones spirits.
And, not that ever really matters, I have had 3 compliments over the course of today.
My very best to all!

Amazing quality from start to finish. For the price Guerlain makes superb fragrances IMHO. Citrus opening, in the classic gentlemen's way, that blends into a nice tobacco juice with patchouli and peppery spice off my skin. I really like it and find it to not be overbearing even in warmer weather so this is a "Vivaldi" juice (FragBros). For the price, I would say this is a safe blind buy. Enjoy!

Today I snnifed a almost empty bottle of this masterpiece that i've bought in 1996, (gold cap). I have to say that it is much stronger and substantial than my new bottle of it; which seems that they have done a cheap reformulation. I found the same occurancy in Opium for man. It was also a great scent, but now it's just a distant memory that it used to be.Shame.....

TrephineArtist

Yesterday I was lucky enough to sniff both the EDT and EDP of Heritage in a store and I've just got to say I can understand the plaudits this fragrance gets even if I also find it to be really not my kind of scent at all!

This is a very elegant and classy scent, I would say mature (of age or mind) for sure, this isn't going to be for everyone. However like I said even though it's not for me, the dry down simply oozes class, it's highly aromatic and a kind of timeless scent. It's got to be some kind of a Holy Grail type scent for patchouli lovers and definitely a must try for those folks!

I found the EDT to be more to my tastes slightly more 'contemporary' in 2020 (all relative,it is called Heritage after all ;) ) but the EDP was much stronger and longer lasting, very powerful indeed!

ookerdookers

CK Obsession meets Zino Davidoff. Smoother, more refined, and subtler than either.

pronose

A true masterpiece by jp Guerlain ! I don't like the new reformulation has less depth & more flat! Bring back the original formula !

richard.legg

Gorgeous, spicy and chocolatey patchouli. Wonderful blending, very smooth with no rough edges at all. This reminds me a little of CK Obsession, but this is much more complex, smoother and more refined. I can only imagine what the vintage formula was like!

FragranEssence

Great stuff! I prefer the EDP more, since there are so fewer notes, but the same exceptional DNA is achieved. But this is a cherished work of art in and of itself!

@joseph.matthias: You've got a nasty little mouth on you, dude! Why don't you grow up, and be a man, instead of hiding in your "little boy" psyche! Nobody likes disgusting talk like, and it doesn't make you tougher or meaner or stronger or more attractive. On the contrary, it makes you look like a little kid who desperately needs attention.

If that was what you were going for, then it worked. You certainly grabbed my attention with those totally unnecessary expletives. Again, grow up!

First off : how are you to categorize this one ? Is it woody? Floral ? Oriental ? Aromatic ?

Heritage EdT somehow makes me think of Guerlain's take on the Classic Davidoff Zino, but yet it also has similarities to Guerlain's own Shalimar ?! Even if launched in 1992, you'd think it was older, as it bears a mood resemblant to many male classics from the early 1980s.

The opening of bergamot and slightly dusty lavender transforms effortlessly into the heart of coriander, pepper and patchouli and settles gently on a base of ambery vanilla and woods. I could swear there's cinnamon and quite a bit of tonka there as well, but these are not listed.

Heritage comes off very gentlemanly and luxurious - classy and sophisticated with a distinct Guerlinade. It is warm, elegant and subtle and has a timeless quality to it. I feel it's a great scent, but somewhat hard to use for casual settings as it actually demands you to be dressed up in a suit, shirt or other formal attire. On the other hand, when dressed appropriately, Heritage wears like an outer layer of confidence, quite impressive for a perfume.

It may not be tailored for the younger crowd, but to deny it as a classic male fragrance is hard - the statement that it "bears the heritage of old values in revelation of the new age" is actually spot on. Also, there is no room for the unisex fickle with this one - this is a man's scent no doubt.

Andy the Frenchy

I'm not going to reinvent the wheeel in stating that this one is a patchouli-centered fragrance.
Starts with an in-your-face citrusy lavender, supported by aromatic notes (juniper and clary sage).
It keeps going with a noticeable dirty patchouli note (supported by an orchestra of notes, noticeably spices and florals (rose and geranium in particular). The base is a vanillic cedar, supported by moss, overall giving an impression of sandalwood (even if I can't spot it clearly, tbh). Beautiful, that said I had to spary something like ~1ml per wrist to reach just moderate projection... But no big deal, it's very nice and versatile, can be had for cheap, thus I recommend it, even if the performance is quite terrible. And yes: the drydown shares clear similarities with Zino.

Elegant without making a statement. That kind of fragrance that is not a real game changer, but that will be missed if absent in a collection. Classic, but still smells contemporary: the magic of Guerlain.

Colder days, 30+

My lord, what an amazing scent! I recently bought this to add to my other Guerlain (16) fragrances that I own, and am kicking myself for waiting this long to add this to my collection. As others have pointed out, it's a complex fragrance yet you can still smell the Guerlain DNA in this. At drydown it does become powdery and I find myself loving this more and more as the hours pass by. Just amazing!

Guitar 2016

It's a great scent, very complex masterful blend of notes. It opens with fresh fruity citrusy, then it changes like slightly spicy, dry down is vanilla woody. This is a warm woody fragrance, I love this scent. Top notes : Lemon , Lavender, Bergamot. Heart notes : Coriander , Pink peppercorn. Base notes : Patchouli, Cedar wood, Tonka beans, Vanilla. Longevity is very good. Highly Recommended.
Two Thumbs Up.

This is the perfect cologne for me, a solid 10 out of 10, my #1 frag. It’s my signature, go to scent. All seasons, all occasions, a Swiss Army knife. Some make this sound so stuffy. It’s not stuffy or just for wearing a suit. It’s mellow and laid back, but yes, it’s for a refined gentleman. In my opinion you can easily wear it up, (especially the edp) and your can wear it down as an every day frag but just go light. It has so much going on, bergamot, orange lavender, vanilla, floral notes, cedar, woody. Never boring, 35+, it’s a manly scent. Easy blind buy. I have the edp also, which is my second favorite frag. Definitely for dressing up if you prefer, but go light if going casual. This is not unisex imo, it's just too manly. I would not like to smell this on a woman. It’s not sexy at all.

GeorgieBoy

I love this one more than the edp. The notes seem to be identical and they smell almost exactly alike but there’s something in the edp that doesn’t sit well with me.
This one smells more sweeter and creamier for me. Absolutely love it!
Very light projection so don’t be shy with your sprayer

diane9247

A very luscious spicy-woody fragrance, leaning masculine, but soft enough so that I can definitely wear this! The bonus is that I don't get any of the usual don't-light-a-match men's aldehyde concoction (or, was that just a '70s-80s thing?), even though it's listed. On me, there isn't any floral except carnation, OK rose, too, and nothing green even in the beginning. It might be different for you. There is a comforting, arms around you 1960s feel to Heritage, perhaps because I've been hit with a spell of nostalgia, lately, or maybe because it dries down a bit powdery...in a good way. For a man, it's earnest, it doesn't pretend to be a sex-machine, it simply hints at it without all the noise. You just want to find out! I can easily transport myself back to my parent's dinner parties of the '60s, when men drank Scotch and the ladies sipped cocktails. Maybe with a cigarette, maybe not, and Miles Davis, Nancy Wilson, Bill Evans on the hi-fi.

On a woman, I think it's a different message. A little bit dangerous, certainly sexy, sneaky rather than earnest. You haven't smelled this before on a woman. Later in the evening, the softest, most lovely patchouli & sandalwood on earth. Pretty for day, if worn lightly, but gorgeous at night.

Scent it flying

Got a 10ml decant Of Heritage edt (2019) to try it because after the Great reviews on here regarding L’instant I got a sample of that and didn’t really find it appealing..

Heritage however, is... Very appealing to my nose!... absolutely amazing.

Only problem is that on my skin it lasts an hour or two at most before it’s pretty much gone all together and that’s using the moisturiser method to increase longevity. I take the decant with me and re-apply through the day but it’s just a bit dissapointing having to do so..

I’m considering buying the edp instead but I can’t get hold of a sample first and I’m worried it’s not gonna smell the same as the edt..

How many here have both, or have smelt both side by side, of the 2019 heritage edt and edp’ s and can give a solid opinion on the variations?..

Registeralloveragain

The most refined patchouli note I’ve ever smelled, mixed with sandalwood perfectly. The patchouli is so refined while still being full bodied, not like those synthetic replacements like clearwood

Classic? Yes.
Complex? Yes.
Manly? Double yes.
Chic? Absolutely.
Warm? Indeed.

This is as if the Habit Rouge vibe took off its cozy red coat and wore a sharp and commanding black suit with a dark red tie and a calm white shirt.

Truly the fragrance of the esteemed and dignified gentleman.

I love it. I absolutely love it.

I had a bottle of Héritage Edt back in '92/'93, shortly after it has been released - from all the fragrances I encountered then - I got the sensation of it smelling somehow out-of-time, something belonging to another epoch altogether. It did not feel contemporary for an instant. At the same time, I was puzzled about its suave perfection, softness and the multifacetedness of its details. Having come across a vintage bottle some 25 years later, Héritage still astounds me. I find it as out-of-time as when I first encountered it, and now I can recognize the many Guerlain connections that have been observed about it. The links to Jicky, Habit Rouge and Samsara and strangely enough, the impact Héritage might have had on Guerlain's L'Instant pour l'homme a decade later. This particular non-contemporaneity Héritage had in the early '90s, together with its quite peculiar marketing images might have been a reason for it never becoming massively popular. Despite all of that I think that at least in its original formulation, it's one of the most delicious comforts, civilized scents I own - perfected cosiness. The massive list of ingredients also is a distinct antidote in times when too many producers believe that less-is-more in perfumery.

andrewatic

I have just purchased EDT in a new bottle, production batch from March 2019, and it’s fantastic! I mean just as beautiful as in 1992 when it first came out. Wasser is a genius of reformulation. This batch has a wonderful, crisp and radiant top note, to die for! I absolutely love it!!!

nickelrider

Beautiful traces of peppery-amber, royal cedar, smooth sandalwood and deep peaceful lavender linger the morning after first sampling Guerlain's magnificent 1992 masterpiece ...

As its name implies, Heritage invites the wearer to experience a nostalgic journey through the wrought-iron gates and stone walls surrounding stately ivy-covered estates ... oak-paneled studies amidst fine art and comfy leather furnishings ... and top-down motor-outings through the English countryside in navy-blue monogrammed wool blazers. Heritage communicates quite clearly that one's appreciation of the finer things must include one of the finest masculine fragrances ever created.

My new go-to for the Fall season and an appealing office-friendly scent if one doesn't overspray. C'est très romantique et classique!

joseph.matthias.young

Best barbershop fragrance ever! That might sound like sort of a harsh critique, but really, this makes it a staple pour moi!

unicolider21

I bought it in the mid 90s when I was very young. I gave it away to my dad because it was "too formal" for me. Now, being 47 years old, I decided to try it again.
This is really a masterpiece, Guerlain at its best. Great longevity, an unique and powerful scent.
I understand why it has one of the best rates in this page, totally justified.
One of the best scents I have in my collection.

Criglett Clussnum

Heritage is an unbelievable fragrance! An absolute classic! It's like a creamy cinnamon type of fragrance if you haven't tried it. It's masculine, it's sweet but not in an annoying way. Very floral and very 90's in my opinion. It's a delicious scent but I wouldn't say this is a gourmand but maybe it could go in that direction. I almost think of cinnamon rolls with a floral touch. Some people get a root beer smell. This is one of the best Guerlain fragrances and also a must have fragrance for a man. It's that good! I give this a 9.7/10

Forever Neil

It's a very masculine amber fragrance. The notes like the oakmoss, patchouli, and the sandalwood make the amber masculine and smooth. The lavender seems to give this fragrance the spicy vibe. It relaxes me when I get anxious. It's a calming fragrance you wear for yourself. I'd consider this one of the best office fragrances of all time, and will make your day easier. It's scent therapy.

kerikerinzfragger

OK so I'm revisiting this review (December 2019) as my thoughts on this have changed a heck of a lot. Initially I did not like it at all but now I really am enjoying it. It may even become a love with further wearing.

Also my comparisons with BfMI are way off!! I don't know if it was those first few sprays or what. Maybe it's settled? Who knows but it is much better now. It's summer time here and I'm wearing it right now (evening time) and I can't stop sniffing it. It is really nice. Anyway, instead of deleting I have left my original review below. Feel free to read it and laugh;)

It is very nice indeed :D

ORIGINAL REVIEW (August 2019):
This has been a big disappointment for me. I'm reminded of a slightly milder version of Bentley for Men Intense. There is a note (or combination of notes) that really turns my nose up. I don't like it at all. I've tried giving it a whole day to see if it settled in the dry-down but it's just pungent to my nose.

I absolutely love Habit Rouge & L'Homme Ideal Cologne and really like L'Instant De Guerlain & L'Homme Ideal EDP but this Guerlain is a huge pass for me.

I like most of the old school frags but this ain't one of 'em.

In closing, if you enjoy Bentley for Men Intense, or are looking for a milder version of that, then this might be your thing. It definitely is not for me.

Koflan

Warm, dark, dry, calm, complex and inviting. Strong, classically masculine, very mature. I can imagine the biggest criticism of this is its maturity, the old man factor, but it's a balanced fragrance and still a worthy addition in 2019.

I get lots of patchouli and sandalwood, and then a mix of aromatics, florals, musk, and the warmth of some amber. It's a grounded scent, no particular sweetness, no brightness, not citrusy or flashy. It's quiet confidence.

Forever Neil

I am the proud owner of a vintage 1997 full bottle of this gem. It is my prized collection sent to me by a dear friend. All I can say is "WOW" . This fragrance checks all the boxes for scent, performance and longevity. I will ask that this special bottle go inside my coffin.I will never be separated from this bottle. Beautiful, masculine, refined, gentlemanly, exceptionally well-blended juice that screams class and refinement. This is how a university professor in a tweed jacket should smell like. Definitely meant for mature, confident individuals that wear fragrances to underscore their strong personality. Not to create one.

17seyed

The quintessential lavender fougere. Many many fragrances have this DNA, but few have the finesse and flair of a Guerlain creation. Whether you like or dislike this fragrance comes down to how do you feel about fougeres. It can't get more classic and refined than this.

Up there with Creed Bois du Portugal although this takes a softer and less soapy direction.

There are many, many, classically masculine scents; what we would call barber-shop here in the U.S. Lavender, oakmoss, sandalwood, and coriander are some of the notes most frequently projected by these types of fragrances, but barber-shop fragrances are also famous for having a ton of notes. With so many notes, what separates the "great" from the "good" is the balance and blending of the fragrance profiles. Guerlain Heritage is exceptionally well-blended and balances aromatic and woody journeys that smell like a much more expensive fragrance. Heritage is "great", not "good"... highly recommend.

Perfect for the office or a romantic dinner out with a loved one.

The year I was born this perfume came out and now, 27 years later I'm trying this gorgeous perfume on my skin and my nose are in flames in the best sense.
The sillage of Héritage is incredible with just TWO sprays and that's what I call PERFUME (but is an Eau de toilette), this are the kind of perfumes that I love, with an enormous sillage.
Patchouli, sandalwood, rose, amber, peper and geranium are the most noticeable notes on my nose.
You don't need put your nose in the exact moment you spray the perfume in your skin because is super strong, just give its time.
Is very complex but very very rich.
I like it a lot.

gedlive

I used to like this most in the Fall and mostly Winter. Then I lost interest in it as a Winter fragrance, thinking I will never repurchase this.
Well, with the hope of Spring in the air, I tried this again, and wow!
It's a rich sophisticated frag, perfect for cooler Spring days.

I've gotten to know Roja Dove fragrances; good but over priced. Roja Dove, the owner and perfumer, likes to use aldehydes in his frags. His fragrance "Danger" many say is like Heritage. Danger is a $450 dollar frag. I think Mr. Guerlain who created Heritage, did it with the same care, skill, and creativity; To produce a very classy and refined gentleman's scent, that balances classic and modern.

Respect for the respectable. A calm confidence.

I was in Vegas last week and checked this out at the Bellagio boutique. I'm going to get flak for this but I was instantly reminded of another fragrance I already have. I got Heritage instead after a bit bit of hemming and hawing and when I got back to the Mirage, that's when it hit me: it smells like Dior's current formulation of Jules.

Luxurious, charming, clean, woody and sweet (but not too sweet). A little boozy in a way. Parisian nights.

wisconsinboy

This would be a "love" fragrance if not for the aldehydes. Aldehydes always give me a headache and come off as unnaturally scratchy in a fragrance.

joemilleys

This review is for the new formulation. I have not smelled the vintage.

I do really like this stuff. It smells like pure class. It starts off with a lemon peel type citrus note and a lot of herbaceous notes. Opening reminds me of walking through a fresh herb garden. The dry down smooths out with woodiness and some lingering herbs as well. I suppose the herbs are also a bit floral too but in a masculine way.

Even though I love this scent, I don't recommend blind buying because it is not a versatile scent that would be for everyone, especially a younger generation. I think this is a perfect office fragrance if you dress up to work.
You can also wear it at dressy events too. The good news is the scent lasts a long time but stays close to your body so it won't overwhelm others if you get a bit risky with where you wear it.

With that said, I think if you wore this in a tshirt, jeans and flip flops you'll smell kind of stupid. It's definitely not a casual scent you could just wear every day. I also would not wear this on a hot summer day but perhaps a cooler summer night would be fine.

All in all, it's great but limited to certain occasions.

wisconsinboy

Aldehydic. It's too waxy, aldehydic, and un-natural to me. It feels chewy to me.

Re: the Arabic language review that Sandmen did a fair way down the page. I might humbly suggest that he could have done this.
I’ve run it through Google translate so we can all read it!
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT MY REVIEW!
Here it is:
Heritage guerlain
My relationship with perfume was for me, as Emmanuel Kant calls it - an absolute first choice - I came from the beginning, growing up in the middle of perfume, and even my old friends were obsessed with this beautiful world.
As time went on, it seemed to me a necessity, something I needed so I could not keep up with life in a way that would comfort me.

So there are some perfumes we can not but raise the hat with respect and appreciation, including but not limited to Heritage Fragrance of Gerlan.

And from his name, we see the value of perfume, it is really a precious jewel when you are lucky and put your hand on it!
My first encounter was with the fragrance in 1996, acquired immediately and without hesitation after I discovered it in the context of his propaganda on a page of the pages of an international magazine.
I was impressed with the fragrance of the first use, impressed by the smell of exotic and no smell of any other fragrance, and I was also impressed by the bottle of elegant, which was then without a machine gun to make the classic character of the unique product.
And how to wear the perfume Eritaj enjoyable when the sun is absent and leave on the ground some of its light and warm and warm. , Announcing the beginning of a happy evening!
If each fragrance has its own special feature, Heritage is characterized by sandalwood extract, which is the main and most prominent player in the fragrance.
The fragrance starts with a halo of lavender and sandalwood, which includes the fragrance of the whole from its opening to its base. It sees the best fragrance in which the sandalwood has been placed with extraordinary professionalism and considered it as a conduit for those who wanted to recognize the dazzling sandalwood. Oily moss, it is noticeably noticeable in this rich opening full of natural ingredients. It is truly a wonderful and rare opening and makes you feel cheerful and optimistic.
Indeed, the beauty of this perfume line that distinguishes the fragrances of Gerlan, and especially the perfume of John Paul Gerlan legendary and by the way this aromatic line exists as a fragrance in the perfume of the Antistress de Guerlain and I think that John Paul Guerlain contributed to it
In order to join the Wet Wet Pachuli in solidarity with sandalwood, the role here is to soften the fragrance and give the opportunity to Jasmine and Carnation, not dry, black pepper, red, together and coriander in secret, although this smell remains somewhat linear
And in the end all these ingredients that we have settled on the base of fragrance, you find natural musk and natural amber wait impatiently and at this moment, the tongue can not be described in short, the smell becomes spirituality, unlike the role of cedar wood is the inhibition of perfume regarding oak moss as I thought in the first of it The beginning of the fragrance, which works and reduces the Xia to break the space for the rest of the ingredients to appear in the base every Dakka is the secret always in the aesthetic perfume Aldkory
I hope that I have perfected the details of the ingredients of perfume
Note that the fragrance of Hertaj reminds me of the fragrance of Zeno Davidoff, the common denominator is sandalwood
This revision of the Vintage copies means antique and old and I advise to avoid new releases that have a bottle resembling a bottle of Hap Rouge.

Beautiful memories to forget her cause with this fragrance at work, traveling with friends, and on happy occasions.
I still use it today, because it has a very respectable place in my mind.
His fragrance awakens the gentle emotions in the soul and brings them to the public, even though you do not express them. In other words, the art of the Heritage fragrance says silence and also suits the proud man himself and my father has a high sense of aristocracy.
This was my experience with the fragrance
In conclusion, I tell you that the fragrance of the Heritage of Gerlan does not need advice for its use, because in my opinion it is the bright star in the world of perfume and has millions of fans.

Heritage guerlain 10/10

How can I describe this? Imagine you spray Zino by Davidoff and let it cool for 5 min, then layer Guerlain Homme on top of it. Voila! You got yourself Heritage EDT, it is smoother than Zino though, the bugspray quality that Zino exudes in the opening is not present here yet I prefer the drydown of Zino. Just like Tiffany pour Homme, they all dry down to a creamy woody scent.

Mr. CG White

Heritage is one I rarely reach for (I have to change that) but when I do I'm immediately reminded how wonderful this is. When I was growing up I remember my dad having a bottle of this with a gold cap and I recently ran across the old empty bottle but couldn't smell a thing, some treat the golden cap bottles as being much better but as I sniff my hand I can't really imagine it being better than what I'm smelling....pure bliss for me.

EDT review

This is a very nice citrus/floral scent combined with lots of sandalwood and a nice touch of patchouli. I used this first during summer and it smelled ok to my nose but not special however i did respect that the blend was done very well and high quality of the scent.

Tried it again for a wedding invitation in the cooler weather and now i am a big fan.
I started getting so many different notes, each time i caught a whiff i sensed something different i started to look around to check it wasn't someone else.
This smells very classy.

I would say its the most classic modern scent Guerlain do.
This scent is the one i would recommend any young man to buy for their first Guerlain scent if they are over 30.
Do not judge this scent straight away as it does start out smelling very mature and can easily put someone off. However it does a 360 in the drydown or once it settles and smells very modern and unique. The best part for me is the way violet is used in this scent where it pops up from nowehere shows it's face and hides again. This scent is a work of art.

Lasting power is great i get an easy 6-8 hours and can even smell it faintly after 10 hours. Projects in a very mannered way unless you spray too much. I would use this scent for cooler eavening/day time when its below
14 degrees Celsius.
Do not use this during the summer day time as it will be too much.
for me this is a top fragrance every man should try once in their life.

the only other guerlain i rate highly are Guerlain Homme EDP and L'homme Ideal EDT.

Hats off to previous reviewers and perfume connoisseurs! Heritage deserves this "Heritage" of estimators! I am one of them! One of the few fragrances where the sandal is well sedated by a perfect patchouli. Dry-Down similar to a human embrace (no joke): I feel enveloped in cedar, amber and coriander.
Rating: 8.8 / 10

WSAENOTSOCK

This has the same DNA as Versace L'homme, Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree, & Zino Davidoff. This is probably the best refined of the bunch, however it is probably the least overt in the projection & longevity department. Still worth owing however.

atxwatch

I had high expectations...and I liked the top notes. But the drydown is so dominated by cinnamon and carnation that this reminds me legitimately of Big Red chewing gum. I just can't get past the bubble gum / chewing gum note on the base notes, so I could never buy a bottle of this.

APULIAN

one of the best release of the 90's. i just love heritage, very manly, charmy, oldschool but not outdated. the composition is so well balanced, it opens fresh-fruity but immediately a special blend of spicies, floral notes, creamy woody notes with a soft touch of powdery vanilla arrive to hit your nose in a pleasant way. but the main protagonist is one of nicest patchouli i ever come across.it's criminally underrated, many fragrance collectors are mad about insense by givenchy but for me heritage is far more superior, more masculine and refined. a year ago a found 2 vintage golden cap bottles, so im happy to use it freely. i heard reform is good too.
better for 28 and up, for casual and formal situations but not for playful or sporty events, u can use heritage in any season, maybe not in the warm summer days. performance is good, nothing amazing but nothing to complain. un profumo da gentiluomini!

ps- happy to see that a young, beautiful youtuber like DEMI RAWLING love it. not all young people are invictus-addicted...

Just beautiful. It is masculine and very polished. Women really seem to love it.

muotarek

A pioneer in masculine perfumery!!
smooth Patchouli, a touch of rose, hint of sandalwood & dose of lavender when the latter gives the scent a barbershop vibe. I really started to dig this stuff, it is amazing and outstanding. As usual Guerlain doesn't miss when it produces any perfume so far! Absolutely great quality and very complex scent yet easy to wear! that is the hard equation in the perfumery industry.

It has a lot of character, dark, ultra masculine & stays close to the skin on me. Héritage does not force itself into the place; it seductively whiffs your surroundings to come closer.

Please, just please, let the classics alone and go bath into your chemical waste...

Just ordered this for less than 40$!!! Lol what a deal thanks again DEMI Rawling

Registeralloveragain

This is absolutely great quality and very complex it takes a few wearings to actually realize what’s going on. The opening is more balsamic and aldehydes but once it dries this beautiful woody accord comes out in the forefront and it is extremely unique and great + classic. Genius woody accord

10/10 the ladies go weak at the knees whenever I wear this vintage version to formal occasions.

Well SHIT ! I had an entire story typed and almost finished and then my internet app on my phone decided to Close and it's gone.

Probably for the better, lol. Long story short I was in Vegas at the Guerlain boutique and sprayed about 6 fragrances all over my wrist and arms and feel in love with one of them, thought that I knew which one or was but had it wrong and bought the one that beleive it or not was the scrubber, like worst fragrance I've ever sprayed surprisingly. I am NOT manly or advanced enough in this fragrance journey to get past that sweaty pissy fecal smell of Derby. But Heritage I found out later was the one I fell in love with. Only problem is that they only had a tester of the Heritage EDT not the EDP. LUCKILY the lady at the store was kind enough to let me at least Exchange it for same value, so ended up getting 2 bottles of HHeitage and I made the mistake of choosing the EDP without smelling it, thinking that it would be a longer lasting but still similar smelling version of the EDT. WELL, I learned once again that that isnt always the case...

Dont get me wrong I like the EDP version but it's definitely much deeper and smells more dense, I think what I liked so much about the EDT was that it was just a perfect blend of slightly sweet, slightly spicy from the cinnamon, lightly floral but just perfectly balanced the whole time, but it all leads to the most perfect subtle yet supple leather finish. For me being in my mid 30's the EDT seemed more wearable and just more to my style. The EDP is still very nice bit it because of the extra depth it does feel a little more "mature" is the only way I can put it really. Maybe it has less of a leather component on the drydown and a touch more of the cinnamon and some civet or castoreum, and a touch more of the floral aspect ?

So long story still kind of long, I am keeping one bottle of the EDP but I still have 1 more sealed bottle if anyone would be interested in trading for the EDT version let me know...

Cheers !

If you love Patchouli, Sandalwood, Cedar, Amber, and Lavender, this will be a gorgeous gift to your lovely self.
This is a very affordable fragrance that is rich, lush, and creamy. It's definitely a Woody Oriental potion made in Heaven. This is a mature fragrance for anyone with a matured mind. Better worn seriously but again with confidence, you can rock casual as well. This is not the same but a vibe of chanel coromandel which happened to be one my best chanel fragrances; so you see Heritage is in good company.
Decent projection and decent longevity. Check it out if you want something unique, classic and sensual.

NoiBoi

(Vintage version)

Well, this isn’t an easy one to explain. It’s essentially an extremely rich, spicy, sweetened amber/patchouli fragrance. There are lots of florals which for me seem to get drowned out by the heavier notes. The overall effect is what you would come to expect if you’re familiar with Guerlain. It’s a high quality, mature but not dated scent for cooler days. A classic in my eyes, but not quite a masterpiece.

Beautiful. One of the nicest fragrances I've tried. Better still, it just gets better and better as it dries down. Definitely my next buy.
One of those fragrances you keep wanting to sniff.
To me, it's very unique, bold, and sweet.
Annoyed at myself for not trying it sooner.
