By by Dolce&Gabbana is a Floral Woody Musk fragrance for women. By was launched in 1999. Top notes are Lavender, Bergamot, Cyclamen, Tangerine and Lily-of-the-Valley; middle notes are Lily, Cedar, Orchid and Violet; base notes are Musk, Coffee, Ginger and Sandalwood.

Wild, leopard print bottle hides a very feminine fragrance, warm and intense with a powdery, musky trail. The freshness of sicilian clementine and bergamot harmonized with muguet, transports us to its heart composed of baroque style cyclamen and muguet along with voluptuous lily, orchid and cedar that are followed by the warm base composed of sandalwood, vanilla, coffee and musk.

@jimiray69 Zebra is the clone for the MEN'S By in the zebra print bottle. THIS is the review page for the WOMEN'S By in the leopard print bottle. I checked the Alexandria website hoping to see a clone for the women's version but no such luck unfortunately.

Please try , Eutopie No 4 .I was surprised when I was tried Eutopie, and I bought two bottle of this baby. This is exactly By Dolcr Gabbana , very attractive and sillage is perfect . We can not found By , and this is a good option for us 👌🌸

scentiful

First impression is that this is masculine, the kind of scent a biker boy would wear. But I’m keeping it in case I feel differently about it later.
Edit: opens with menthol and shaving foam, settles into something quite pleasant but stay easy on the trigger and works best in cold windy weather.

By is fresh and "dirty" at same time, another one of brilliant perfumes by Dolce and Gabbana of the 90s (other two are Sicily and Feminine).

It opens up with bergamot and some indolic, sweaty note. A bit metallic also.

Then starting from the heart it is sweet and musky, very warm and bold, sexy, close to skin. There is no leather in the pyramid, but it is actually the mood of the fragrance in my opinion. The "leather" note (which is probably a combo of coffee, cedar and lily?) is subtile but consistent. It reminds you of a handbag that smells both like leather and some generic cosmetic scent. Also I can feel vanilla. The more time passes, the more bergamot fades and the lily becomes heady, a little bit dirty and sensual. Smells like a kiss, like the skin behind your ear, when you are hugged haha

The perfume is very chic, but also playful, flirty and seductive. Very original, recognisable, memorable. Interesting, very 90s, if you are wondering what was the perfume fashion of the 90s, here it is, in the leopard bottle.

I am selling one of my bottles, dm if interested.

All of you pining for this discontinued gem can find a beautiful rendition from Alexandria Fragrances called Zebra. 110$ for 100ml. It's delicious. Pause your anti clone house sentiments for a brief moment and take advantage of it! You won't regret it.

D&G need to bring this back! This was THE best scent around 2000, and I hate that I didn't appreciate it enough back then. Should've gotten another bottle when I had the chance :(.... A reviewer below has compared this to Coffee Break, my first kneejerk reaction was hell naw, but out of sheer curiosity (and nostalgia for By) I dug out my bottle and I kind of see where she's coming from. By is definitely the more outrageous sister, Coffee Break the goody-goody middle sister that doesn't stand out too much.

onnagreen

Can Dolce and Gabbana get this back in their collection or can another perfumer make this.... I still have a little less than half a bottle of this and it is an amazing scent. Before ouds and pralines started taking over perfumes.

A. Rose123

“By” is a time capsule in social culture; a peppery, smoky, herbal, sweet, coffee blend with a metallic kick that smells like “on the town.”

Early noughts fragrances were SOCIAL. Not in the prestige, image focused way of the decades immediately preceding: They had spunk. They had personality. They were bottles of stories, to be unfurled at parties, clubs, bonfires and street shopping.

“By” — like Chanel’s “Chance”, Givenchy’s “Hot Couture” and “Angel” coming into her own —were made for open spaces at night, dewy garden parties, Summer bonfires, club decks, movie theaters, concerts, dance floors and barbecues.

These weren’t just personal signatures, they were social signals. They were scents to be shared. Defiantly optimistic or delightfully eccentric. They were a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” level performance. Frags fit for Titania!

Eclectorina

Such a captivating, soothing fragrance! Smoky, gourmand, unforgettable.

What more can I say, I'm lucky to have my bottle almost intact. As I used to find it challenging back when, but now? Oh my gawd.. More, more please!

eatingsea

Okay, this is discontinued, but I'm going to have to find a way to never be without it. BY is like Replica Coffee Break's grown-up, more "experienced" (wink wink) sister. The musky brightness set against swirls of coffee-tinged lavender and creamy sandalwood is brilliant and sexy. The sillage here is impressive.

I always fall for these perfumes that are out of commission. It's so unfair, lol.

I am one lucky girl to have scored a whole 100ml bottle of Be just recently. Bought based on the reviews and the hype. So no nostalgia here.

I do like it, but I don’t see the huge sex appeal that so many of you mention. The prominent note to me here is white musk, added vanilla and lavender.

I would love to create something similar layering classical white musk (Body Shop) with YSL Libre. Maybe it could work?

As for me, I am happy to use it to any occasion, also for work. Still waiting for someone to compliment it though, or commenting the very rare vintage find.

tlusif

After bidding far more than I should have on a vintage bottle of perfume, I finally got my hands on a bottle of By. It was worth the wait and cost (I didn't go crazy; got a little lucky....) Completely unique and undeniably complicated, By is a study of contracts; crisp lavender set against a warm floral backdrop, bright citrus juxtaposed against creamy sandalwood, and a powdery musk that competes against bites of ginger and sips of coffee. By is overtly sexy but somehow it does not overpower. In fact, By could be considered subtle compared to many of its compatriots. I stand taller and walk prouder when I wear By. By is a 90's assertion that even the dawn of a new millennium can't scare me. Top 5 perfumes ever. I adore and savor my bottle of By.

Lirascents

D&G please please bring this back, one of my favorite perfumes.

D&gredcap

@algerianlila I have this one and Alexander McQueen Kingdom and they are in the same animalic route.

Guccibaby46

My sentiments exactly @ jenLauren. This was by far one of the most complemented scents I have ever owned. Just writing this brings back so many memories of a time where I thought I was invincible. I wore this perfume every day to work in a very male dominated environment, it gave me confidence, I felt sexy and woe betide anyone who got in my way. Ahh those were the days. The only scent that has come close to giving me the same bad ass attitude is stash by Sarah Jessica Parker, but it’s not By.😩

JenLauren

D&G!! Bring this back! So many redundant and unexciting fragrances flooding the market and we can't get this gem back?

algerianlila

Most sexy perfume I ever owned. I can smell lavender, licorice and sandalwood. It reminds me a tall sexy women with brown lipstick, leather purse, smoking a cigarette in a Dark City (Sin city) of the early 2000's. Please bring it back!!! Anyone knows a similar vibe perfume?

NemNem

All time favourite and Sicily
So sad it’s discontinued

eaudemale

Amazing, lavender, heavy flowers, cedar and coffee with a light powdery and creamy sandalwood base. A true modern woody floral, very sexy, night life fragrance with quality ingredients. If you like Black Orchid you will love this, it's androgynous enough that a guy can perfectly wear it.
One of the few female - male fragrances duos that actually match in notes: lavender and sandalwood are heavy in both By. Dolce & Gabbana's answer to JPG Le Male and Classique. Veryyyy ahead of its time.

Forbiddenjade

If you are looking for anything close to BY, try Libre of YSL ;)

Could be its dupe, some 2 decades later.

I searched high and low for a sample of Dolce & Gabbana's infamous By for Women and after several years the perfume gods answered my prayers. A few precious millilitres of this discontinued vintage perfume fell right into my lap, and I can finally offer up my thoughts.

My decant of By for Women has sadly lost some of its top notes due to age. It opens with a sharp alcoholic note, intermixed with a funky urine odour. I was preparing myself for bitter disappointment, however, the fragrance was quick to settle into a sensual, clean lavender.

Most lavender fragrances have a spicy-herbal aspect, however, By for Women smells clean and musky on the skin. Soft floral notes such as lily, violet and orchid create a feminine, creamy element, and the coffee bean accord keeps this fragrance interesting. I find the coffee note far more palatable in Dolce & Gabbana's By for Women than in other well-known coffee-centred fragrances like YSL's Black Opium and L'Or de Torrente. It has been skilfully blended so that it doesn't overwhelm.

Perhaps it's a skin chemistry thing, but By for Women smells really soapy on my skin. This is not a bad thing as I quite often enjoy fragrances that evoke a clean, crisp feeling. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't consider By for Women a 'sexy' fragrance. Sensual, yes, in a grown-up, well-dressed woman kind of a way.

The lasting power was impressive on my skin, persisting well into the evening. The projection, however, was relatively light after applying two sprays to either wrist. Increasing the number of sprays may increase the chances of others being able to smell it on you.

The question on everyone's mind; is this fragrance worth the exorbitant price tag it now fetches on eBay? In truth, no it's not worth $800. If you're looking to shell out nearly a thousand dollars on a fragrance, you'd be far better off purchasing a niche perfume crafted with quality ingredients. That's not to throw shade on the beautiful By for Women, but the likelihood that you'll receive an overpriced bottle of a fragrance already beginning to turn is very high. Proceed with caution and obtain a sample first.

Dabarefootbombshell

This scent is beautiful. It is sexy, feminine, and unique. I smelled this on a girlfriend once time and knew once we no longer worked together I would have to get this. This scent has now been continued but I am lucky to have it. I have a large collection but nothing I have smells like this scent so I can't even off a replacement suggestion.

Italo Paz

What can I say about By? It's sexy as hell, it's charming, kinda mysterious. It's sad that I've never smelled nothing compared to this, By is one of the sexiest perfumes I've smelled so far. I can imagine someone in their 30's, being successful, knowing exactly what they want and what they don't want, being the center of attentions wearing this.

I simply love the lavander and coffee combo, it gets creamy and musky after a while. The scent is exquisite, smells like something magnetic, something that pulls you closer and makes you wanna stay the night.

The name of it is a pain in the *** to search for, I know it's rare, but when I google "By Dolce & Gabbana", I don't wanna see Light Blue, The One and all the others D&G's scents.

Anyway, a m a z i n g.

greywolf

Please dear God bring this back! I love this one so much, It is one of the few scents where the Bergamot smell doesn't disappear quickly. I smell like warm Earl Grey tea all day long when I wear it. Everytime I wear it at least one random man comments on how good it smells.

suhaesa

i have a couple of bottles of this all vintages !
don't get me wrong but all i remember this smelling like was pure MEAT raw meat i don't know what but i was unable to wear it for it truly smelled like meat to my nose back when it first came out ..!

missswish

TRUTH: There, simply is no other. PERIOD!!!
It's disastrous that D&G cannot bring this INCREDIBLE scent back - if, at least SYNTHETICALLY!...But with all due respect, animals MUST NEVER be used/abused for our vanity - and so, no more BY fragrance.
With all due and respect to D&G, I have found "BY Type" from a USA company called "THE FRAGRANCE SHOP" (not to be confused with the same company name, based in the UK). I LOVE their version!
I have purchased several "dupes" from this oil based company and have been pleasantly surprised with their outcomes (check out: "Gypsy Water" - MUCH BETTER than the orig). NOTE: "The Fragrance Shop" is OIL ONLY fragrance based; you won't get the aerosol blast. PH is ! 888-377-3677
**PS: I am going to do the impossible and try to re-create: "The Italian D&G Leopard Queen!"

minaggizete

my God, what a perfume! i have been wearing it somewhere late 90's. This and Sicily are two of the sexiest, indulging, magical fragrances i ever had and i still cannot understand why D & G discontinued them. Please bring them back!!!

Yasue

Oh my, I would almost kill to own this again, but it's so expensive now I'd feel guilty buying it. It's one of the few I ever used from start to finish. Reading the notes it would have never appealed to me, since I find lavender rather cold and antiseptic in most cases, but everything about this is sultry. Everything about it was divine. It was uninhibited sex in a bottle on me.

If this scent was a person, she would be an goddess-like presence, dressed in a fetish-inspired, body hugging, catsuit. Her milky skin, glossy red lips, heavy lashes and a jet black asymmetrical bob would make you powerless to resist her commands. Powerful stuff!

Mona Lygre

My best friend bought this perfume many, many, years ago, she said it was one of her best smelling perfumes,

when she nearly finished it of, it bored her, and she gave it to me, very nice,

I still remember the special, and wonderful smell of it, so soft and warm and lovely,

so yes, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE D&G, BRING IT BACK TO US!!

masako_30

By was not an apt gift at the time. I gave it to a colleague, who didn't even want it!!
Now I miss it so much, she has never even worn it, plus I haven't found anything else like it over the years.
I would have been happy if at least she had used it.

RayIna

When we talking about top 5 desired discounted perfumes and which are very rare, BY would probably always be in that group.

As a man, I can say that woman's version of By is better than men's, which is also great.

Combination of lavander + coffee are always great, seductive and fresh, and also aromatic.

With great performances and tons of compliments, you can't go wrong with this scent. I'm worried because I'm spending my last 10ml of this scent, but I'll certainly buy new one after that.

Wyded

This perfume is really similar to white suede by tom ford,it's nice and unisex IMO

The.notorious.n.a.p.p.e.r

I have 50 ml bottle with about 15ml left if any one is interested :)

Blossom_Puff

I am wondering why some people call BY generic. If it is so generic, why is it so impossible to find anything remotely alike?! By is one of the sexiest, seductive amazing fragrances and i have tried my fair share of scents just to maybe find something close, without any result unfortunatelly. I have found a similar vibe in the vintage red cap Extrait version, but that one is also gone. So you guys that say it s generic, please come out with those 'generic' fragrances that are similar to this.

michelernst

I am selling one 3.4oz PM if interested

I loved it back then. Who wants to swap it for sth else ?

D&G !!! your research and marketing dept. sucks! You must be aware that this is one of the best / sexiest perfumes in the world?! BRING IT BACK NOW!!!!

yaaay i have this and it smells really good love it:)))

frances.franco.rizzo

Who in their right mind decided to discontinue such an Iconic Scent that can never be duplicated ? If i were the CEO of D & G i would have had that person institutionalised for making such a poor decision. By statistics, this Eau de Parfume e Che Bellezza di adorante ! was not even given a fair chance and timeframe to break through to the diverse ages of females and never given a chance i believe due to lack of Marketing the product.. Someone in Marketing should have been fired !!!

I have resorted to emailing D&G customer service and asking them why on such a poor decision to discontinue this female adoration.. This scent that encapsulates 'La Dolce Vita Della Donna'? Wearing this scent on a daily basis, i turned heads and was even stopped by men and i'm talking about business and well to do males 2 or 3 times a day just to ask me 'What is that perfume you are wearing please ?'i would tell them and they would say, it's such a seductive scent, i must buy this for my wife ! :-).. I would catch the elevator up to my floor and when i would sit in my office i had people say 'Frances, that scent ! it's everywhere'it's so mmmmmmmmmm.. well, D & G ! are you aware of how many women are longing for this exotic, sensual perfume to be resurrected ? Please take note and bring it back with a vengeance and stop other's from pirating your beautiful product.. xo Now if someone can start up a petition of some sort or a facebook page dedicated to BY !! i Probably guarantee Dolce & Gabbana will be taking an interest via Social Media.. xo

efisia

I have resorted to contacting D&G to beg them to resurrect this perfume. I would suggest everyone does this! Please contact dolcegabbanabeauty @ emea . shiseido . com (no spaces) and let them know how much you need this perfume back in your life!!! Let's make it happen!

bronni666

i was so lucky to obtain a bottle of By off carousell marketplace.

initially, By is almost masculine with spices nutmeg and sandalwood but it dries down into the most seductive intoxicating alluring scent ever. i detect some powdery musk and floral notes after the spice subsides making it an almost pretty fragrance but it never get there. although this is well blended because i cant detect any 1 floral note and am very grateful that i cant smell lily of the valley either. LOTV is a big yuk for me.
By is absolutely gorgeous and i feel special when wearing it. invincible. maybe not but you get my drift.

. the male version of By is equally wonderful. i bought an ex boyfriend a bottle just so i could bathe in his aroma. very sexy.

anilinam

I remember having received this as a gift from a perfumista friend. I saw the tacky bottle and decided to ignore it for a few months, until I tried it, and fell INLOVE!!!

I agree D&G needs to bring this back!!! Maybe it didn't sell enough because of the ugly packaging. They should go for the more generic square bottle of Light blue, or Dolce & Gabbana and use a translucent leopard cap.

AmoreProfumi

DOLCE needa bring this back, this is one of their best scents ever IMO hands down! I remember when my mom use to wear this I can still smell it when I think of it..BRING IT BACK D&G!!

Shut

Hello to all. could be the woman parfum be unisex?? or total women?? thanks

Cherry_Darling

I can't believe this is so expensive. It's such an average scent to me. Sorry lovers, I'm sure many love this. It is nice, just very generic high street sweet floral on me.

somnorika4u

If someone live in switzerland and whant to buy this parfum i can sell it! I have this parfum at home is an old gift i am an happy colectionar of parfums with a big number of parfums!

onaona

I tried to sell By.
I tried to swap it.
Hell, I even considered giving it away.

It never worked out. The timing was always off, or the offer for a fragrance of less interest to me.

The olfactory gawds were looking out for me!! :) I don't have another fragrance even remotely like By. I'm rather convinced there isn't one.

Time warmed me to By. I have only recently begun to appreciate the lavender note. Chanel's Jersey is my lavender of choice, but it has opened me to the note in ways not anticipated. By, benefited from my fragrant journey.

The lavender in By still presents as the note frequently does for me, more masculine than feminine. The lavender is also really green, not sharp and green, but thick and weighty. The coffee only adds to the unisex feel, to the unisex appeal. It deepens the fragrance even further, adding warmth and deliberation. The only other flower I detect in this composition is Lily of the Valley. There is not even a hit of orchid or violet. It'm not sure I would even want to smell them here. Ginger is also less present for me than other voters, decreasing what appears to be the spicy appeal.

By does have an intensity I can't explain with the notes. It pulls at me, insist on awareness. Not all fragrances have this, thank goodness! I'd never get a single thing done.

By isn't the sexual sledgehammer for me many find it to be. Possibly because I don't have any history with it. There are no memories to trigger steamy encounters, no tricks of association.

Noteworthy Notes
lavender (green, with a masculine lean)
coffee (warm and dark)
lily of the valley
x-factor (which accounts for the intensity, not explained by the notes)

What's missing?
Nothing! It doesn't suffer for the lack of spice or sexiness many find.

No longer for swap. No longer for sale.
I've come to my senses. Thank the gawds! ;)

Madrona

Bergamot-lavender-musk-ginger-bomb on me. As is usually the case, the discontinuation has probably done a lot to add to this one's reputation. I'm not getting a lot of sex appeal beyond the fact that it is decidedly unisex-y, as a lot of these sex bomb scents marketed to women tend to be. I guess it is a bit different than I expected, but I like it, and I am willing to bet that it would grow on me, so I am going to nip that in the bud and decide not to get into this discontinued bombshell...

smellagent

I read where this was a few folks unicorn and I see its good reviews so when I saw a full bottle for sale for 15 dollars I went for it. I like it but it seems a tad masculine. I usually like real feminine scents but I can go unisex. I can see why it is so popular because it so rich smelling. I get the lavender and musk, musk is not too animalic and I am glad. I think the coffee note makes it smell very niche. I still don't know if I will keep it or swap it cause I am not sure I love it. Jury still out

Lexa

Who was 'the nose' behind this one? Please and thank you in advance.

This is not a review, just a heads up that perfume parlour are now doing a copy of this

Sanskilainen

I wore this back in the 90's when this beauty appeared in the stores. I loved it then. Now twenty years have passed and I have thought of it so many times, with distinct memories. Suddenly I got lucky and got a half a bottle on ebay for a very good price. It took ages to arrive but now it is on me. And it is all that I remembered and much more. Back in '94 I did not think about and around perfumes, I just went for them. I still do, but I added the thinking.
I did not remember the flowers!
I remember the base and sillage and warmth but not lavender. By is really a unique fragrance and a beauty. It did not feel sophisticated back then but it is much more that than I remembered. Super warm and certainly sexy. And you know what: has a resemblance to Dune (the 90's version). They do not share notes, but something happens on the way that the middle of BY and the beginning of Dune are very similar. Suits me fine as I love Dune. Get your hands on any of those if you get a chance.

belle de sud

I waited for By for 5 years before finding a bottle. When it came, still warm from the postman's truck in summer, I sprayed the back of my hands in anticipation - and was not let down.

Lavender, bergamot and faint liquorice open the composition, followed by musk, orchid, violet, then sandalwood, vanilla, coffee. By is truly original and is special from top to base, no note is out of place. I can compare it a bit to Oh! de London, a discontinued Yardley scent from the 1960's. Nothing 'new' smells like it. An agreeable musky trail presents itself as soon as the bergamot fades into the floral heart. It sounds juxtaposed but is a seamless and completely beautiful fragrance. Worth the wait!

Desconocida

deda147

I got really lucky and scored this discontinued beauty at my local auction site for a song. I was intrigued by the reviews of people here and always wanted to try it, so I'm really glad I snapped it up.
The opening is like sniffing at a moist, heavily fragrant lavender bush; the lavender is the most obvious note, quite intense actually, but the bergamot and tangerine give a sort of luscious effect, like morning dew. I can't specifically make out the cyclamen and lily of the valley, but I'm sure they counterbalance the intensity of the lavender note.
Soon after the opening notes start to fade, a lovely lily and orchid combination starts to show up.. They're both blooming, however they have a sort of green, airy quality about it. It's like they're enveloping the strong lavender with their lush, soft petals. The violet however doesn't show up immediately, but after a while I can notice fragments of it's deep, sweet scent. The cedar isn't really noticeable, at least to me, but I guess it serves to balance the other middle notes, otherwise it could become too floral.
The magic really begins when the basenotes appear. Normally I'm not really fond of coffee as a note, but it is implemented really well in By. The ginger gives the fragrance a nice, fresh touch, which makes the floral notes really sing. The musk/coffee/sandalwood combination is to die for. They give the fragrance it's plush, alluring character; they combine really well with the floral notes. I can't describe the drydown quite well since it's quite a sensation. It's so smooth and gorgeous!
The longevity of By is about 7-9 hours on my skin, quite a solid performer. However it projects really well (can't really comment on sillage). If you can snap it up for a cheap price, be sure to do so. You really don't want to miss this one. And yes, I have to agree that it's firmly unisex. Now I'm hoping I can buy the male counterpart sometime.

onlymynoseknows

Sad that this fragrance is discontinued. This fragrance was sexy as hell on women. Definitely a boxershortdropper:)

Nova_

I cannot begin to comprehend why Dolce and Gabbana had to discontinue this masterpiece. It is sexy, charming, playful, and sensual without being sleazy. One of the best perfumes of the 1990s (maybe even the past century!)
I wish there was something similar to it, I had to try many perfumes that were suggested as "similar", but nothing really resembles it. Please suggest your experience with other perfumes that have the same notes.

DOLCE AND GABBANA IF YOU READ THIS, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET THIS PERFUME BACK!

HELLO,

I HAVE FOR SALE AN UNOPENED BIG BOTTLE -100 ML,, SEALED ... ANYONE INTERESTED CONTACT ME... ITS A GORGEOUS SENT... :)

juji

Not a review, but I just looked and saw it on Ebay, a 3.4 for 199$. hats in the same ball park as MANY niches, so any of you looking for it, get over there and throw out a bid!

meissie1982

To me this one stands for my time in high school, fooling arround, first love...

At that time this scent was very popular, you had the davidoff cool water type of girls, and the D&G By type of girls.

Found myself a full 30 ml of this beauty and oh my yes throws me back in time!
The first spritz masculine? The lavander is most upfront to my nose, it takes a few minutes to become one again. But yes the sandalwood kicks in and ahhh there is that smooth vanilla coffee smell I was so fond of.
So special and so different from now days perfumes, complex and one of a kind.

Last on my skin for 4-6 hours. Stays close to my skin. Maybe because I do not want to overspray and use my precious 30 ml in an hurry.

My taste in perfumes has changed, CK Obsession now has my heart and Reminiscence Oud to, but By u are a special one to treasure if it's only to smell my youth and wild years at high school again!

lapioggianelpineto1977

this was so freaking beautiful that it is almost a crime against humanity having discontinued it. What a shame!!

Zarya

Is there any similar perfume on the market? Anyone knows? Please share :)

MARIE PANTHERE

can somebody tell me who is the perfumer of this masterpiece? thank you, best regards to everyone who comments here... :)

Daniela_Beatriz

One of the best perfumes I ever owned. I keep its empty bottle, just to get a whiff of the fantastic and unique fragrance - ginger, coffee, flowers, all very well blended into a sexy, carnal and animalic fragrance.

Still pondering if I should spend the money required to have it now a days...

UPDATE: I finally had the gut to buy a bottle on eBay. Why, WHY did I wait so long to get my darling By back?

amywamywoo

Ooo, this is potent stuff!
Smells like licorice, lavender and smokey vanilla.

Unique, strong, sexy, intense...VERY unisex.

lvscents

This was my favourite perfume for several years. Spicy, woody, fresh, feminine and uber sexy! I can't believe how much it's been sold for now! If I had the money .. yes .. I would pay the price for sure!

The first time I bought this fragrance, I wanted to wear it with the iconic D&G leopard print corset dress. It was the middle of the summer and my best friend and I were going to be in Las Vegas for a girls weekend away. I tore the package open and tested it. I was almost knocked over by the licorice, so much so, that I couldn’t smell anything else. I sold the fragrance on EBay.

I found it again, and thought I would try it one last time. I have learned that my skin wears fragrances with a musk base really well in the winter, however, since winters in Los Angeles aren’t usually very cold, I waited until the temperature dropped below 60. It turns out that this is absolutely the best time to wear this fragrance! The licorice note is now in the distant background while the coffee, musk, and sandalwood notes are center stage. The florals are so well blended, that I can’t pick any particular one out, but I do love how the orchid softens the heavy lily a bit. Now, I understand this scent. This is a cozy bombshell scent. Think of Bridget Bardot in her leopard print coat and you’ve got it.

By reminds me of one of my favorite ways to drink coffee. In the winter, I like to grind up some anise seeds with my vanilla nut coffee and brew them together. It adds just a little intrigue and makes my regular morning coffee just a bit sexier. I would imagine that if I layered Lolita Lempicka Lolita Lempicka (for the licorice) over Dolce & Gabbana The One (for the musky florals), it would be similar in feel to this classic beauty. I would even go so far as to suggest that The One is the younger, more innocent sister of By, except without the licorice, and replacing the sandalwood with sweet vanilla. By is definitely a sexy winter scent for date nights. It’s voluptuous, along the lines of Gaultier Classique. It goes really well with my vintage leopard print coat, fitted black turtle neck sweater, black skinny pants and pumps. It would be perfect for New Years Eve in Las Vegas! I am so happy that this is back in my collection and that we finally understand each other!

BRING IT BACK PLEAAASSSSSEEEE!!!!!!!This is the most sexy scent EVERRRR!!

I have been looking for the masculine version for years! I used to wear it back in the 90's. My boyfriend, knowing how much I love it, went through all the trouble in the world to try and find it for me while abroad, but he came back with two 50ml bottles of the feminine version -which I actually like- but it's not the one I really wanted. Anyone with the masculine version feeling like trading it for one of mine, please send a private message or e-mail me at [email protected]

kimberlylizkennedy

Hi, I have this perfume and I can decant it for someone who would like to decant a swap for me. If interested let me know.

afilar

I think that black orchid by tom ford smells similar to this one but thats the closest I found.

valda.pacekajutepetrulene

I am wearing Valentino Valentina today, it reminds me so much of BY by D&G! lighter fresher version, but smells very much alike! I have them both, but still trying to dare wearing BY D&G, very bright and screaming scent!

afilar

Can any one recommend any similar perfumes, please? This has been my absolute favorite for years and I have been searching for something similar.

mariana7945

this is STRONG, mature perfume

Wish I could still get my hands on this as it was always my favourite. It always made me feel sexy and loved it for date night! If anyone out there has some the dont want I'll have it lol

kkw80

I have a 50 ml bottle of this with around over 40 ml left if anyone in the UK is interested. It's not my cup of tea!

aurigavr

This is one of those fragrances that you learn to appreciate after some times but it ends in falling in love with it.
A great opening of tangerines and bergamot with some coffee on the background.
Then fresh flowers and a sensual musk, not synthetic nor random but a well built combination.
A very sexy evening fragrance attractive as an animal lure.

Unfortunately discontinued, a must have in your evening wardrobe as a seductive weapon.

9.5/10

Cams

This is almost impossible to find! I just did and paid way too much for this discontinued gem but its an absolutely outstanding fragrance!

al.to

Must to have it!
a masterpiece complex and sexual.
Filthy sex things.
Built to seduce someone.
Unisex!

I absolutely loved this perfume when it was at it's most popular. I never stopped to think in those days they would discontinue it. If I had known I would have kept the empty bottle or just a little bit in the bottle to be able to appreciate it forever.

Now they just churn out The One flankers an claim they are sexy but compared to this they are not. Dolce Gabbana have butchered their original one that came in the red velvet box they had to add marsh mellows of all things to it now it is just candy sweet fluff.

I don't want them to bring back this one because it would be like in those horror films where someone is brought back to life but they are not the same anymore so the characters have to kill them again. This perfume if brought back would be butchered and I guarantee cupcakes or marsh mellows would find their way into it when it was so not that style of perfume. This would be done in a bid to please the younger generation only to be ignored by them and discontinued again. Horrifying for such a classic.

What about us older people who remember these perfumes and want them left alone don't we matter at all? Our version of sexy is not cupcakes or too much vanilla or marsh mellow.

Oh well that is progress. I guess I am just not on trend at times when it comes to some perfumes.

meisocd

My newly found "By" recipe: Liz by Liz Claiborne parfum, mixed with Prada by Prada parfum, mixed with a little bit of By type essential oil.

MTNB53

I love this scent but unfortunately it has been discontinued. If anyone knows of a similar scent, please let me know. Thank you.

Molko

It was my first original fragrance and I was too young for this, but I liked:) Very heavy/harsh, sexy, wild and long lasting. The male version was also a great stuff. D&G, bring these success scents back!:)

marzena.michalska.44

My number one !

moniquesimo

SEXY is the only word to describe this scent. Bring it back!

beesha

i love BY, it is discontinued and hard to find, but this week i tested PI from givenchi by mistake thinking it is females frag (it is mens), BUT i am sure it has similar smell!!!very very similar, good not ordinary smell and comforting

andjela

BRING IT BACK!!!

stephanieklein

An easy lay, this perfume is what I call my "whore lure." It's sex, raw, straight up. The closest I've found to it is (so weird to admit) Boyfriend by Kate Walsh. It's not a dupe, but it's that same "one night stand" mood of a scent.

Emma2013

I used this perfume for four years, I still have 3ml left in a 50ml bottle but daren't use it because I may have to resort to getting a perfumer to make it :(

If anyone has a replacement I would be grateful.

dolcethadon

This is truly a masterpiece just like its male counterpart! I absolutely love this perfume and truly believe it to be one of the best fragraces for women I have ever smelled.. Does anyone know of any perfume similar to this? I know Kristiasand New York is similar to BY MAN. Im trying to find a fragrance that Is as similar to BY WOMEN as K-NY is to BY MAN..

bobbydrugan

Can anybody tell me if this was their signature scent and what have they replaced it with? I absolutly love this scent and I am so sad that it is no more, such a sexy scent.Perfect for a cold evening as its such a warming scent which holds lots of happy memories for me xxx

LanaD

please emal me if you want to trade this perfume, and look at my collection. After reading all those rewiews I'm really want one!!!

emi_artist

Like going into a Sicilian coffee bar in the sizzling sun, and being hit by the overwhelming aroma of coffee while surrounded by flowers and candied citrus cassata. The coffee is all in the drydown, warming and waking you up like your Italian boyfriend would sexily bring you a hot espresso in bed on a sunday morning. Amazing.

Tovah

I always thought the original By by Dolce & Gabbana (in the leopard print cylindrical bottle)would become the "Opium (fragrance) of the 21st Century". The scent reminds me of clubbing in Orange County and LA because attendants in washrooms were always spraying it on people as they handed out towels and lipstick. I never had to leave a tip to be able to wear By - it migrated to everyone in a room. It's an assertive, pushy fragrance; Bar Refaeli looking like a bold investigative reporter in a leather skirt and very narrow toed high heels. It's the kind of scent that expects the velvet rope to be unlocked without a word. I don't think this scent smells particularly good, but it makes a hell of a statement. There aren't enough fragrances like this anymore.

Mollydelovely

I seem to be getting nostalgic for 90's perfumes at the moment. In my opinion this is one of the best from that decade.
I can't believe that I wore this in my teens!!! I'm pleased that I had a chance to wear it!
Definitely ahead of its time....
By is overtly sexual, iconic and a bonafide cult classic.

Kittenbug

I got this years ago, when I was 24. I was pretty bold then, as this is a statement perfume, imo. Warm, spicy, musky, sensual, and a bit masculine (a man could easily wear this). Eventhough I don't buy D&G anymore, I kept this around since I haven't smelled anything like it and that won't give me a headache nor smell like grandma's musk.

Bdoel

i love this perfume and it appears to love me, I get comments every time I wear it and my husband adores it on me :) I wear it any time of the day, any time of year and without fail it makes me feel very sensual. I am greatly disappointed that I can no longer purchace any in n.z, I'm down to my last quarter bottle :( and I don't like the price I would have to pay on eBay :/ I'm trying to find a new signature fragrance after wearing By since 2001, im finding it extremely difficult to replace such a unique and exquisite fragrance.

Happyme2009

This is unisex at its best. I was lucky to find a big bottle, sitting shy on a shelf among Chanels and Diors, partly hidden behind newer and more popular scents. At $122 plus taxes I grabbed it. It was the last one. This happened 2 years ago. Since then, rarely I have worn it. The bottle with its leopard print just doesn't match the juice inside.
Well, little side story: I recently got a sample and fell in love with Gris Clair, from Serge Lutens. The connection instantly formed: they are similar in power, similar in vibe, with few differences.
BY is a spicy lavander scent. It's brigh, lumionous, mixed with cyclamen and pepper. I don't really get the coffee or the other notes until very very late. A very raw and animalic muskiness dominates. This is where it's very different than Gris Clair: Serge Lutens mixed it with amber, making Gris Clais somewhat warm and smoky, while Gabbana is lavander mixed with musk. There is an insensey feel in both of them; in BY is more like fresh, wet wood, that someone is trying hard to burn, while in Gris Clair the insense is nice, dry, etheral.
Lasting power and projection are very good on me.
Reading all the "blaaaah" reviews makes me think that those people have a bottle or a sample that is turned, expired, whatever. Because BY is by far different than so many fragrances on the market, and surely not boring, inofensive or common. It's in the same class with Serge Lutens, at least when compared to Gris Clair.
I still like Gris Clair a little more. It's warmer and a little sweet. But BY is stronger, with better lasting power and large(about 2-3 feet) projection is a compliment getter, and I have never worn it without at least one person stopping me and asking me what I was wearing giving me a compliment after.
So do I recommend it? Sure, especially to ladies that like unisex perfumes, edgy, a little sharp and very unusual.

mymlan

Sorry for beeing a bit fussy now but... The actual note pyramide doesn't contain lavender. How come lavender is in the above notes? Also violet and ginger should not be there, but ginger lily.

This is the note pyramide:

Top Notes: Sicilian Clementine, Bergamot, Living Muguet, Purple Cyclamen

Middle Notes: Living Ginger Lily Needle, Living Tiger Lily, Pittosporum

Base Notes: Living Vanilla Orchard, Vanilla Bourbon, Brazilian Coffee, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Musk.

Source: Basenotes

This is a beautiful delicious and fresh-spicy fragrance with musky undertones. Absolutely stunning!

Whit

Evidently, this got discontinued in 2004 and after reading the reviews on here and the note listing, it made me curious and intrigued to find it. I wasn't looking for the perfume but instead searched for any body care products. I did in fact find the body milk and promptly ordered it. All I can say is "Wow! This is some seriously sexy stuff!" I don't think it's loud at all. Very sexy with a little bit of masculinity, this is an "I'm going to take control of you, and you're going to like it" scent. LOL This was a blind purchase for me and I'm very happy. Can't wait for my hubby to get a whiff of this! ;)

marji

PLEASE BRING THIS ONE BACK PLEASE...

reborn

Why all designers discountinued only the best fragrances?/Are they nuts????Why,why, why??This is one of the most interesting and nice fragrances i have ever smelled and owned.I keep my last bottles like my eyes.i would like to spray it every day but when it finishes what???i am very mad that it is discountinued!rrrrr

Curly Sherly

@glitterlust - i had both By Dolce&Gabbana and using at the mmnt Trussardi Inside for women (not for the first time:)), they have some similarities, but wouldn't say too much. Obviously they 'match' my own taste - they would have something in common, but I still wouldn't describe them as 'alike'. By has much more spiciness to it - at least on my skin, Inside is... much warmer n sweeter, and oh! I just love the coffee to it! :0)

karaaslang

one of my girlfriends used to wear it, saw it in her vanity table, smelled it and baaammm...people say it is sexy, for me it is innocent. sexy but an innocent sexiness by all means. dolce gabana is good at not repeating itself cuz none of their signature fragrances reminds of each other. innocent sexy girl with slightly dark secrets...musky..woody...unique...

kathrinaaguir

Too strong for me but good for fall-winter time.

semj

This is one of those frags where I can almost detect every single note. The problem with this is that By gives me bitter coffe grounds with ginger and lavander. My poor confused head cannot accept this mess. It may be sexy but I have yet to find it which way.......so sad.

glitterlust

I find Trussardi Inside Man to have quite a lot in common with this (across the heart notes at least). I'm wondering if Inside for Women is at all similar too.

takeasniff

I am going to step out and say that Dolce Gabbana should like most celebrities, stick to what they are good at. That is these strong perfumes. The One is all the rage at the moment but it just doesn't hold a candle to these old favourites. The original Dolce and Gabbana is also beautiful along with Sicily but sadly people can't handle them and say they are too strong, old lady, etc. I wish they would bring By back and also create some flankers that really are sexy not all this wishy washy rose and vanilla Sh..t! I wear those when I am bumming around or shopping but I am always searching for a really strong, sexy perfume to add to my collection but it is getting more and more difficult these days they just don't seem to exist in the mainstream. I have been looking at some more niche perfumes at David Jones to try and find something because to me most of the major houses that used to be good seem to have lost the plot.

tommy_girl

I'm so glad that I've got the chance to smell this rare perfume(thanks to sophi).
it's much different from whaI expected to smell.it start with strong, sharp lavendar scent and after some minutes it just reminds me of insolence, but less screaming of course.violet is really dominant here, also I think I smell something like iris.it's so powdery, almost smells like skin care creams.
but what I love about this perfume is the drydown.there is definitely warm coffee note that I adore.I just wish I could jump into the base notes without smelling the first notes.totally By was a good, new experience for me.

helenely

They don't make them like that anymore...I fell in love with this fragrance when it first came out, wore it religiously and got a ton of compliments on it. What I love the most is how it makes me feel: confident, brass, sexy...This scent is not for the faint of heart but if you like wild, woody notes, can handle the silliage and have access to a bottle of this liquid gold, try it without hesitation. DG needs to bring this one back!!

RedAllert

I have just very little lkeft of this perfume, and i'm sooooo sad bc there's no chance to buy it anywhere :(

mschase11

This has been my fav since 1999! So sad I can't find it anywhere. D&G need to bring it back for a special and I would buy every bottle I could find. Not sure what it is, but when I wear this men and women love it!

francoiseholan

Zoo smells. Monkey smell, the smell of animal in heat. I love it

veresda

I remember this perfume as being very sexy, with a rather bold fragrance reminiscent of pheromone perfumes. If you're looking for musky - this is it. Unfortunately, the perfume gave me a horrible rash (the only perfume to do so) and I had to get rid of it pretty quickly.

Amour, Michele

Wore this when I was 20, not old enough to really grasp the idea of sexual attraction. This one particular night, I wore this to a club, and found myself constantly eyed by strangers, and to finally have one come up to me and be asked what perfume I was wearing. The lust in his eyes made me, frankly, afraid at the time. He was definitely the predator-type; dark, handsome plus open-shirt, European swagger, etc.

Last year, now aged 29, I wore it with distinct purpose of seducing another. And surprise, surprise... As soon as I step inside his car, he asks what perfume I'm wearing. Only this time, I felt wildly confident and ready to take on the challenge.

This perfume will never fail to call attention. It is quite pungent but I think that's part of the appeal. A perfume with notes like coffee, cyclamen, and sandalwood thrown together cannot do it justice without striking a pose when it enters a room. With the depth of the base notes and its intoxicating floral dry-down, this perfume is a feminine powerhouse. If you're feeling a little classy lady with "clean" sex-goddess like, I suggest this perfume.

Alas, it is discontinued. Makes me love the rather OTT leopard print but opaque bottle a bit more.

vabe

i was in love with this one but can't find it any more...if i still had it i'd wear it all the time.
many compliments by men especially when i wore it combined with body lotion.
i really tried (and prt of me still trying) to find something similar to it.
i'm missing you "by"...

Tigerlillian

Wowee! Oh Mama! It's rare that a perfume knocks me off my feet like By.

Opening with a big anise and dry ginger bang, like an unsolicited slap on the bottom from a cute but sleazy guy who totally thinks he's 'all that.'

Bright and hot with warm citrus and a fresh, sweet woody herbal note, probably from the lavender and cedar.

The flowers in this are an erotic, milky, musky blend--tons of sap and audacity without being confusing or obnoxious.

The drydown is just darn sexy--subtley sweet coffee in a soft ginger and sandalwood base. This phase reminds me a lot of a Revlon Fire & Ice flanker called Smoulder which is now sadly discontinued... only By is much stronger with more attitude.

Yes, the woman who wears By will receive unsolicited slaps on the bottom, not because she's consciously asking for trouble, but because it makes men lose control seemingly tapping into their primal nature. He, however will certainly regret doing so because the By woman can certainly hold her own.

redcat

I used to wear this all the time about ten years ago. I love this slightly strange floral-wood scent and its tacky bottle.

I still have about half a bottle and a mini of it in my collection but I seldom wear it since I love others more now. Still, I have many good memories about this scent, and it will always be close to my heart.

hibernation

I wanted to love this but my bottle was probably off and too old (bought 2nd hand). It just smelled like sweat to me.

MissH

Love, love, love! The leopard print packaging suits this fragrance perfectly. It's a wild one! It's the only fragrance I've ever liked by Dolce&Gabbana so it gives me hope that they can launch another equally delicious.

It's quite an intense, powerful cloud at first spray & then its true beauty unfolds to a more subtle, refined and extremely sophisticated scent.

To me, it's what I would describe as the true opposite to light, fresh and crisp,it's velvet in a bottle. It smells like a vanilla latte with a shot of port topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

sherapop

Coffee, ginger, violet, lily, orchid, cyclamen... I only wish that I detected any of these notes in Dolce & Gabbana BY! I don't even smell the lavender in this composition, a note which usually stands out to my nose.

To me this is the quintessential slightly sweet and clean musky base, no more and no less. About as inoffensive as fragrance gets, BY lacks all potential to carve a lasting trace in my olfactory memory bank. This could be the base of any number of current perfumes--and probably is (SJP LOVELY comes immediately to mind)...

BY is eminently wearable and smells just fine, but I don't find it compelling at all. Désolée.

geegee

Update november 29/10
On ebay right now there are two full sized BY gift sets. Theyre not cheap though but thought id mention it in case anyone wishes to bid for them. Theyre based in the UK but i think the seller ships overseas.

Hope this makes someones christmas. I wish i could afford them.

gypsykitten

I love love love this perfume! It opens up very peppery and I can smell the coffee, ginger and cedar. It's brightened up by the citrus notes and softened by the florals and vanilla. I just feel happy every time I spray this on. Everyone that smells it on me seems to like it too!

annabolina

For a long time there was only one D&G scent, that I could appreciate : Sicily.
But now, after it's "call back", BY touched me.
I can not detect coffee, and cyclamen and lily of the valley are muted,( for what I am really greatful), citrusy carnal flowers with the woodsy nuances, and warm, lush, luxuriant base....
Oooohhhh. So - SHE WOLF.

Contessa01

Do not smell any coffee scent in this at all or any vanilla ? It smells like strong spicy alcohol. I would not really consider it sexy but it is nice for summer.

Sevipants19

I just ordered 2 minis....
I have an old bottle in a drawer to compare them to.
The 'new' unchanged scent should come back to me after I compare!
I'm excited.
This perfume is only one of two perfumes I was asked about regularly.
It's very sexy with a true perfume oil smell to it.

Solvita

very sexy.at first a little strong,a lot of flowers, but after 30 minutes becomes creamy, sweet, musky.I like it very much.

LadyJedi

It's a shame By is so hard to find! It is a full-bodied fragrance which starts a bit spicy, with a kind of medicinal note in the very beginning but later on develops into a smooth, velvety coffee-sandalwood trail. It is warm and sensual and it reminds me Samsara by Guerlain in many respects, though the latter lasts longer on me. My skin seems to absorb By very easily and I need to reapply a couple of times during the day but otherwise it is indeed a well-crafted fragrance worth trying!

mymlan

Definitely in love!!! I bought BY Woman on a whim, thinking it could be an interesting experience with such a modern frag for my old fashioned taste. I thought that I would find it monotone and boring, but I was wrong. This is a wonderful, bold and sexy fragrance.

By Woman is delicious and bright from citrusy notes and cyclamen in the top. It is joyful and feminine from the flowery heart of lilys and has a very sensual drydown of vanilla, musk, coffee and soft woods.

But, at the different stages it all plays along. I can get a whiff from both the top and the sensual base notes now and then, when the heart has the main theme. And even in the base a piece of the top clearly joins in.

This is very strange. You could easily call it a linear frag then, but it is not. It definitly reveals distinct phases that has different main themes. But those themes are never left alone. So beside its delicious components By Woman is really a well crafted fragrance that I will wear proudly. Maybe it is love already?

edit: The soul is silky. It's not outspoken, yet not weak, not powdery neither soapy. Rather prominent and silky. Just like that.

lucifera

aarrrghh im starting to like it way more then i wanted to! this was a populair frag during 99'! could smell it allmost on any girl and that made it unattractive to buy back then
but now...it suits me good! and its rare

beautyinthemundane

My first ever perfume, a gift from my first ever boyfriend back when I was a love-sick 18 year old....and I loved it almost as much as him! Those who've said it is sexy are so right and just so, so warm and inviting! Such a shame they discontinued it, but I know it was not hugely popular (in the UK anyway) and have to wonder if maybe the packaging/bottle/image didn't help- it was very trendy at the time (and the first thing that attracted me to it), but perhaps not timeless enough? I too would be interested to know of anything similar. I know someone said Idole d'Armani, which I haven't been able to find to try yet, and also Versace Crystal Noir which again I've been unable to try, although the notes don't suggest a potential similarity to me. Any other suggestions would indeed be welcome- need a sexy nostalgia hit!

geegee

Woo hoo, i finally have this after winning an ebay bid. Granted its just a 4ml & 25ml body wash & 25ml cream but hey beggars cannot be choosers when a perfume no longer is being made.

I have just dabbed a little on to my hand & oh boy am i thrilled.

I dont recall getting a licorice top note before & im puzzled because there are no licorice notes, perhaps my chemistry has changed a great deal over the years or maybe its my nose playing silly beggars.

I can certainly smell bergamont & lavender & im awaiting with anticipation for the dry down of which i adore.

My boyfriend knows this is 'MY' perfume & has never smelt it on me before, im hoping he likes it as much as i do.

Im now going to bathe with this much awaited perfume in a moment & transport myself back a few years.

UPDATE.
Does anybody know of any perfume that smells anything like BY? If you have come across one could you please mail me on here or leave a message on this page for all to see.

Many thanks.

eilismaireg

This is one sexy mutha!! Soft and leathery/vanilla with a touch of kinky rubber. Their best perfume, was my signature scent throughout the 90's- why can't I find it anymore?? Lots of men comment on this perfume so I recommend it highly- if you can get it.
Woohoo! Located a bottle in a tiny pharmacy so I'm the happy owner of 50mls EDP..this one is going to be kept for special occasions as I don't think I'll find another!

Ouch!

One word. GAWWWJUS!!!!

This stuff is absolutley beautiful and unique. It smells like aniseed/coffee kind of, but ultra sexy at he same time!! Imagine the mthe sexiest aniseed you can..this is it!! It's another one of the only perfumes that has made me stop someone in the street to ask what they were wearing.

It's such a shame they discontinued this, I have the male version and it's in my top 5 scents ever.

This scent is alluring, seductive and would suit a woman who likes something a bit more powerful. The bottle displaying leaopard print fits very well with the juice inside. :)

kastehelmi

I tried this one thinking I would love it-
Well, the dry down is beautiful, thick, like an espresso, a forest of sandalwood, and a not-too-sweet vanilla bonbon....
But the opening is powdery violets orchids in burnt coffee with a hint of citrus on my skin....
I'm neither an orchid nor a violet fanatic-I love orchids, as well as violets, they're beautiful flowers, but their fragrance is not the most sublime to my nose. They can be beautiful when their sharpness is somehow toned down. This is definitely a wearable fragrance however, and it would grow on me....
The muskiness is wildly sexy, and the dry down isn't too sweet, or powdery in the wrong way....But I guess this just isn't my style-I don't think D&G is my style in general. I don't really like the bottle either....

Oh, and if this scent smells like Tinto Brasso films, that explains why I don't really like it! Brilliant comparison!

marinadinatata

I had it, and obviously the most sexy one i ve put on -after agent provocateur of course!!!- it seems they dont do it anymore, but for the fans of it, i recommend Idole of Armani,, smells almost identical on my skin, i guess on other skins as well..

katrin__

Very sensual and erotic smell like Tinto Brass's films, full of passion. Only for night.

Adriana_87

I got a sample of this,i must say that it has it all.Spicy, fresh, deep, sexy and warm. The coffee note is very detectible and gives the right kick to the rest of the notes.I agree also with that animalistic feeling people talks about.A great choice for fall/winter,i just wish that it was still availible.Because there is no scent that is similair to this one.

randik

Yesterday I received the long awaited specimen of "By"(EdP) - and I was literally shocked! If there ever was a scent capturing a warm, vibrating, raw sexual energy, this scent is it!That being said, the perfume is not vulgar. It embodies strange mix of class and seduction! There is nothing like this perfume out there, at least not to my knowledge. I really cannot understand why D&G has discontinued such a marvellous wonder...

renneyg007

I'm finally the proud owner of BY! Not my usual taste being that its very woody. On first spritz I was nearly knocked out by the alcohol. The floral nuances are barely detectable and it is very spicy. But the drydown does it for me.....woody, vanilla bourbon in a very raw way (a scent i am not used too but keep sniffing so must love). Musk is there but its woven amongst the coffee note. An erotic, sexy and incorrigible fragrance that i'm going to learn to love.

snobuni77

I have to say that I got a bad mini in the mail (woe is me =(& when I went to the mall & tested a mini they had there I felt the same way about it.I had felt it had gone bad.I think it smells to much like alcohol to me & yes the lavender is very strong. It does smell much better once it dries down but something about this just doesn't do it for me.It is definitely a love it or hate it scent.

Trinity

"By" is one of a kind fragrance! As a fragrance addict (I have about 50 fragrance at home…;-)) this fragrance stands alone! Why? Because I have smelled nothing like it before! It is totally unique and special! A lot of fragrances smell a lot like other fragrance on the market; they do not differ much anymore…which I find very sad in a way.

"By" is a "Wow" fragrance!….I must confess….I was not expecting being blown away by a fragrance! Is there something like "love at first sniff"?...hmm...maybe it is now! I am totally confused and smitten by this wonderful sent. It is like meeting the man of your dreams…your knees are getting weak, your heart is beating faster and you feel like something or someone just hit you over your head!

Funny thing is – I cannot even describe to you how this fragrance smells….it is just wonderful….. What can I say – I'm in Love!

After waiting for weeks I got my Mini of By.
At first I was only a little disappointed because I didn't expect the lavender to be so strong that it is hard to detect any of the other notes. Honestly if I didn't know the other notes I probably would not have noticed them.
I understand it is strong ans somewhat heavy but to me this doesn't make it a winter/fall fragrance. It reminds me of summer, it has this hot African aura to it or I feel like I am in South France in our garden with lavender all around me and here and there some other flower.
Another thing that came to my mind was air freshener. I think it was the combination of Bergamot and Lavender. There are a lot of room sprays containing those notes. Don't get me wrong it sure smells better than regular air freshner but in some aspects it's similar.
Sexy, yes or no? to me it isn't. Most likely because I have a lot of memories connected with lavender and I do not catogorize it as sexy in any way.
Still it is a beautiful fragrance. I like it but I am just not entirely in love with it.
So I am going to have to think about if I really want to get a bigger size, in the end not only because I am still not exactly sure what makes it stand out from all the other lavender fragrances.

By Dolce & Gabbana used to be my signature fragrance. Now I like so many fragrances that I can't have a signature one anymore, but I still like By very much and in a very special way.

Far brom beinga fan og the tradicional Dolce & Gabbana fragrances, I was very surprise when I tried this one for the first time: I loved at the first snif, that brought to my skin the smell of wild violets (that's the way I felt it on my skin). The flower notes of this fragrance, specially the violet and lavender are very natural and airy and reminds me a lot of a the violets I used to found at my grandmother's house.

After that, "the wild violet" note becomes spicy mixing with ginger... and I start to feel the comfort of the woody notes blended with vanilla bourbon in the exact same quantities, wich makes the perfume not too sweet or woody. Coffe and musk in homeopathic doses give the special ending.

The perfume is intense and has a very good staying power. I consider it en evening fragrance.

Wear this if you are looking for something really unique and stylish, and be ready to feel beautiful and draw compliments everywhere. By is a lascive invitation for glamour, but you can wear it easly feeling yourself and very comfortable.

I am very sad it had been discontinued (as so many other amazing fragrances, like Organza Indescence) and I was surprised when I found out it was not in prodution anymore, because it is the best creation of Dolce & Gabbana house in my opinion and many people love it.

By Dolce & Gabbana for Men is also amazing.

To the New Zealand customer, you can sometimes see this purfume on Trade Me. I have heard that it is very good, but still getting the money to try it.

First impression is surprisingly bright with the bergamot taking center stage, then it morphs into an aromatic black licorice for a while - very interesting! It quickly settles down, however, into a lightly spicy skin scent - my nose picks up coffee, vanilla bourbon, and sandalwood primarily. The florals are barely detectable and there as an accent only. Bergamot lingers around through the mid notes, giving the scent an aromatic quality. Musk and cedar emerge very late into the drydown, but this isn't a "musky" scent. Interestingly, though the notes sound heavy, By is actually fairly subtle...once in a while I pick up a delicious whiff of it, but it never overwhelms. Excellent last power and medium sillage.

By does have a masculine quality about it (which I love), and a man could easily wear this, but it still says "all woman", if you know what I mean. If you're looking for a totally unique, seductive oriental, By should be on your list! Takes a more mature woman to pull this one off.

I was very excited to try this one. Sadly, I was unable to wear it because it made me very ill when I put it. This is only the second time this has ever happened so I am still unsure what ingredient would have given such a reaction. I did end up giving this bottle away to a friend of mine and she absolutely loved it.
